국문 초록

본고는 로베르토 에스포지토의 철학 체계에서 니콜로 마키아벨리가 차지하는 핵심적 위상을 분석하고, 그의 마키아벨리 해석이 어떻게 진화했는지를 추적한다. 에스포지토의 사상에서 마키아벨리는 그의 생명정치 이론에 내재된 비정치적·운명론적 경향을 교정하고, 갈등과 결단을 통해 정치적 행위 주체성을 복원하는 필수적인 균형추 역할을 한다. 본 연구는 에스포지토의 초기 사상이 마키아벨리의 『로마사 논고』분석을 통해 정치 질서가 사회적 갈등의 생산적 산물임을 규명하는 데서 출발함을 보인다. 이후 이 해석은 근대 정치의 두 대립적 패러다임, 즉 갈등을 제도화하는 마키아벨리와 갈등을 중화시키는 홉스의 대립 구도를 통해 철학적으로 심화된다. 나아가 본고는 에스포지토의 성숙기 사상이 클로드 르포르의 영향을 받아 마키아벨리를 ‘제도적 사유’(pensiero istituente)의 원천으로 재해석하는 과정을 조명한다. 여기서 정치는 창설(네그리)이나 해체(아감벤)의 단일 행위가 아니라, 갈등에 지속적인 형태를 부여하는 역동적 과정으로 정의된다. 결론적으로 본고는 에스포지토의 마키아벨리가 질서와 무질서의 이분법을 넘어, 갈등의 제도화 자체를 정치의 존재론적 본질로 파악하는 동시대적 사유 모델을 제시하며, 이는 위기 속에서 정치적 창조의 가능성을 긍정하는 철학적 기획임을 주장한다.

영문 초록

This paper analyzes the pivotal role of Niccolò Machiavelli in Roberto Esposito’s philosophical framework and traces the evolution of his interpretation of Machiavelli’s views on politics. In Esposito’s thought, Machiavelli serves as an essential counterbalance that corrects the apolitical and fatalistic tendencies inherent in his theory of biopolitics and restores a robust concept of political agency through conflictand decision. This paper demonstrates that Esposito’s early thought begins with an analysis of Machiavelli’s Discourses on Livy, establishing that political order is the productive outcome of social conflict. This interpretation is then philosophically deepened by contrasting two opposing paradigms of modern politics: the Machiavellian, which institutionalizes conflict, and the Hobbesian, which neutralizes it. This paper illuminates the process by which Esposito’s mature thought, influenced by Claude Lefort, reinterprets Machiavelli as the origin of “instituent thought” (pensiero istituente). Here, politics is defined not as a singular act of foundation (Antonio Negri) or destitution (Giorgio Agamben), but as the dynamic process of giving durable form to conflict. This paper argues that Esposito’s Machiavelli offers a contemporary model of thought that transcends the dichotomy of order and disorder, identifying the institutionalization of conflict itself as the ontological essence of politics—a philosophical project that affirms the possibility of political creation amidst crisis.
