국문 초록

본 연구는 정동 이론에 기반해 한국 청년세대의 주요 놀이 문화인 케이팝 팬덤을 둘러싼 감정적 에너지를 분석하고, 해당 에너지가 어떠한 사회적⋅기술적 배치 속에서 생성되고 증폭되며 순환되는지를 탐색한다. 케이팝 팬 13인에 대한 심층인터뷰 결과, 케이팝 팬덤 활동은 아이돌에 대한 애착과 대중문화자본 축적에서 비롯된 자부심, 아이돌의 성공을 기원하면서 느끼는 초조함과 팬 활동 실천에서 오는 성취감, 팬 공동체에 대한 소속감과 그와 교차하는 단절감 등 다층적 스펙트럼 속에 놓인 정동적 에너지에 의해 추동되고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 그러한 정동적 에너지는 케이팝 산업과 팬 공동체, 디지털 플랫폼과 언론, 개별 활동의 실천 양식 등으로 구성된 탄탄한 ‘정동적 인프라’ 위에서 생성⋅증폭⋅순환되고 있었다. 특기할 만한 점은, 팬들은 팬 활동에 대한 몰입하고 강한 책임감을 느끼며 전문성 있게 업무를 수행할수록 불안과 죄책감에 빠져들고 있었다. 이에 팬들은 ‘놀이’로서의 팬 활동을 ‘자기계발’로 서사화하며 안정감을 느끼려고 시도하는데, 이러한 정동적 합리화는 팬덤 활동을 추동하는 또 다른 엔진으로 기능하고 있었다. 이로부터 시사점을 도출한 본 연구는 ‘성과’를 강조하는 신자유주의적 시간 정치를 비판적으로 성찰해야 함을 주장한다.

영문 초록

This study examines K-pop fandom as a major leisure culture among Korean youth while moving beyond the two dominant strands in prior research. The first, drawing on Fiske and Jenkins, frames fans as active cultural producers and agents of participatory culture; the second, following Terranova’s notion of “free labor,” critiques how fan activities contribute to platform/industry value creation while remaining structurally unpaid. Although these approaches have illuminated the social significance and contradictions of fandom, they have tended to overlook the affective and psychological motivations that propel fan practice. Grounded in affect theory, this article investigates the affective energies surrounding K-pop fandom and how those energies are produced, amplified, and circulated through specific social arrangements. Based on interviews with twelve fans, the findings indicate a layered spectrum of affects—attachment and pride, anxiety and achievement, belonging and estrangement, and self-justifications that offset worry and guilt. These dynamics suggest that fan energies operate atop a robust “affective infrastructure” composed of the K-pop industry and fan communities, digital platforms and news media, the practical routines of fan labor, and the neoliberal politics of time. Building on this analysis, the study advances a critical claim: within a neoliberal value regime, fan consumption and play are increasingly re-narrated as “self-development,” pointing to the instrumentalization of play and calling for reflexive scrutiny of its ethical and political stakes.
