국문 초록

이 연구는 펠로폰네소스 전쟁 시기(BC 431–411년) 그리스 도시국가 간 동맹구조의 변화 양상을 사회연결망 분석(SNA)을 통해 추적하고, 그 속에서 중심성 변화가 중소 폴리스의 전략적 위상을 어떻게 변화시켰는지를 분석하였다. 투키디데스《펠로폰네소스 전쟁사》(Project Gutenberg, 2006)를 분석 대상으로, BC 431~ 411년 도시국가 관련 키워드를 노드로, 동맹·전쟁·외교 관계를 에지로 설정하였다. Python으로 전처리·빈도 분석을 수행하고, Gephi로 Degree와 Betweenness 중심성을 산출해 전·후반기를 비교하였다. 분석 결과, 시칠리아 원정 실패, 니키아스 평화 조약, 아테네 내 쿠데타 등의 위기 상황 속에서 기존 강대국들의 중심성은 하락하고, 사모스(Samos), 케르키라(Corcyra), 아르고스(Argos)와 같은 중견 폴리스가 네트워크상의 매개자로 부상하였다. 이 연구는 전쟁 전후 동맹 네트워크의 구조 변화를 규명하고, 이를 현대 국가 간 전략 환경 분석에 적용할 수 있는 시사점을 제시한다.

영문 초록

This study used social network analysis (SNA) to trace the evolution of the alliance structure among Greek city-states during the Peloponnesian War (431–411 BC) and analyzed how centrality shifts altered the strategic positions of small and medium-sized poleis. The analysis used Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian War (Project Gutenberg, 2006), with keywords related to city-states from 431 to 411 BC set as nodes, and alliances, wars, and diplomatic relations as edges. Preprocessing and frequency analysis were performed using Python, and degree and betweenness centralities were calculated using Gephi to compare the first and second halves. The analysis revealed that amidst crises such as the failed Sicilian expedition, the Peace of Nicias, and the coup d'état in Athens, the centrality of existing great powers declined, while mid-sized poleis such as Samos, Corcyra, and Argos emerged as network intermediaries. This study examines the structural changes in alliance networks before and after the war and suggests implications for applying this knowledge to the analysis of the strategic environment between modern states.
