2020년 5월 25일, 조지 플로이드가 살해된 이후 여러 나라에서 인종차별에 반대하는 수많은 시위가 노예상인, 인종주의자, 식민지 개척자의 동상을 ‘넘어뜨리는’ 행위와 함께 진행되었다. 이러한 세계적 운동은 수십 년 만에 프랑스에서 가장 큰 규모의 반인종주의 시위에 영감을 주었고, 이 나라의 식민지 유산과 노예무역에서의 역할에 대한 논쟁을 되살렸다. 특히 과거 식민 제국의 건설이나 노예제와 관련됐던 역사적 인물의 동상이 훼손되는 사례는 두 가지 강력한 상징과 함께 프랑스에서 폭발적으로 등장했다. 장바티스트 콜베르 동상과 조제프 갈리에니 동상이 그것인데, 프랑스의 노예제와 식민지 역사에 대한 언급이 공공장소에 나타나는 것을 항의하는 의미로 그곳에 페인트가 칠해지고, 동상이 훼손되었으며, 이를 둘러싼 논쟁이 격화된 것이다. 2020년 한 해 동안 다양한 형태로 전개된 동상 철거 운동은 되돌릴 수 없는 흐름이다. 이 운동은 문화를 파괴하고, 목소리를 침묵시키고, 지식을 말살하고, 박물관과 궁전을 채우기 위해 약탈하며, 인종차별적, 성차별적 기준으로 세계를 형성했던 근대성에 대한 전 지구적인 도전의 일환이다. 우리는 학교 교육과정, 박물관, 그리고 언론을 통해 그 어느 때보다 노예제와 식민지의 역사를 가르쳐야 한다. 하지만 교육은 기념이 아니다. 노예 상인과 식민지 학살 가해자들에 대해서는 미화될 것이 아니라 가르쳐야 하는 것이다.

영문 초록

Since the murder of George Floyd on May 25, 2020, numerous anti-racism protests have taken place in various countries, accompanied by the ‘toppling’ of statues of slave traders, racists, and colonizers. This global movement inspired the largest anti-racism protests in France in decades, reviving debate over the country’s colonial legacy and its role in the slave trade. The desecration of statues of historical figures associated with the construction of past colonial empires and slavery has become a flashpoint in France, marked by two powerful symbols: the statues of Jean-Baptiste Colbert and Joseph Gallieni. These statues were defaced with paint and damaged as a protest against the display of France’s colonial history in public spaces. In the many forms it took throughout 2020, the movement challenging statues is irreversible. It is part of the global challenge to a modernity that shaped the world according to racial and sexist criteria that destroyed cultures, silenced voices, erased knowledge, and pillaged to fill its museums and palaces. We must teach the history of slavery and colonialism more than ever through school curricula, museums, and the media. However, teaching is not the same as celebrating. Slavers and the perpetrators of colonial massacres must be taught about, not glorified.
