국문 초록

본 연구는 최근 한국 스트리트 댄스가 전통 문화예술을 창작의 주요 자원으로 활용하며 보여주는 새로운 흐름을 ‘참여적 서사화’의 관점에서 분석하였다. 이를 통해 전통이 더 이상 고정된 문화유산으로 재현되는 것이 아니라, 창작자와 향유자의 능동적 해석이 개입하는 가운데 유동적으로 현재화되며 집단적 정체성을 재구성하는 서사 자원으로 작동한다는 점을 살폈다. 그동안 스트리트 댄스라는 현대 대중문화예술과 전통의 접점은 상대적으로 주목 받아오지 못했다. 이 연구를 통해 이 둘 사이의 교차점을 본격적으로 조명해 보면서, 전통 문화에술이 동시대 대중문화 속에서 어떠한 방식으로 의미화되고 재맥락화되는지를 구체적으로 밝히고자 했다. 나아가 이 과정에서 참여적 서사화라는 개념을 도입하여, 향유자 주도의 해석과 창작 참여가 전통의 동시대성을 새롭게 열어가는 동력임을 강조하였다. 사례 분석으로 삼은 텍스트는 동시대 스트리트 댄스의 장에서 전통 문화예술 활용의 정점에 있는 댄스 크루 ‘범접’의 작품 <몽경(夢境)- 꿈의 경계에서>이다. <몽경>에서는 저승사자·갓·부채 등 전통적 기호들이 ‘국가적 정체성’을 드러내기 위한 기획 아래 파편적으로 배치되며 느슨하게 연결된 스토리세계를 형성하는데, 창작자의 의도는 향유자들의 참여적 해석을 통해 다양한 방식으로 굴절·확장되며 원래 의도에서 벗어난 내밀하고 다층적인 스토리 세계를 구성하게 된다. 이 사례는 전통이 단순히 과거의 유산이 아니라 동시대 대중문화 속에서 협업적 이야기 자산으로 기능할 수 있음을 보여준다. 마지막으로 동시대 미디어 환경에서 참여적 서사화를 통해 전통이 계승되는 과정에서, 한정된 전통 상징기호의 반복적 차용과 의미 왜곡의 한계 또한 생길수 있다는 점을 살폈다. 대중예술에서 전통문화적 요소의 활용이 폭발적으로 증가하고 있는 현시점에서, 창작자와 향유자가 전통의 풍부한 맥락에 접근할 수 있도록학술적·제도적 지원을 마련하는 것이 시급하며, 이를 통해 전통이 본래의 가치를 보존하면서도 K-컬처의 확장 속에서 창조적으로 재맥락화될 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This study analyzes, through the lens of participatory narrativization, a recent trend in Korean street dance of actively incorporating elements of traditional culture and arts as creative resources. The research demonstrates that tradition is no longer reproduced as a fixed cultural heritage but rather operates as a narrative resource that is dynamically actualized and reconfigured through the active interpretations of both creators and audiences, thereby reshaping the collective identity. The purpose of this study is twofold. First, it sheds light on street dance-a cultural art form that has received relatively little scholarly attention-by examining its intersections with traditional culture. Second, it reveals in detail how tradition is resignified and recontextualized in contemporary popular culture. By introducing the concept of participatory narrativization, the study further emphasizes that audience-led interpretation and creative engagement function as crucial driving forces towards renewing the contemporaneity of tradition. This study conducts a case analysis of Dream Boundary (몽경) by the dance crew Bumsup. Dream Boundaryis selected because it represents a high point in the use of traditional culture in contemporary street dance. In Dream Boundary , traditional symbols such as the jeoseungsaja(the grim reaper), the gat (a Korean traditional hat), and the fan are fragmentarily arranged under the theme of expressing the national identity. The outcome is the formation of a loosely constructed story world. The analysis shows that while these symbols were initially placed according to the intention of the creator, they have been refracted and expanded through participatory audience interpretations, resulting in multilayered story worlds that exceed the original vision. This process highlights the cultural significance of actualizing tradition in the present, while also underlining limitations such as the risk of semantic distortion caused by the repetitive borrowing of familiar symbols. This case demonstrates that tradition functions not merely as a legacy of the past but also as a collaborative narrative asset within contemporary popular culture. The rapid increase in the use of traditional elements in cultural productions has generated an imperative to establish academic and institutional support systems that enable both creators and audiences to access the rich contexts of tradition. Such measures will preserve the intrinsic value of tradition while facilitating its creative recontextualization amid the expansion of K-culture.
