국문 초록

이 논문은 <서브스턴스>(The Substance, 2024)에 재현된 엘리자베스-수의 분열과실패로부터 페미니즘 정치학의 실천 가능성을 탐색하고자 한다. 이를 위한 이론적 배경으로 테레사 드 로레티스(Teresa de Lauretis)가 Technologies of Gender(1987)에서 제안한 개별 주체의 ‘미시정치적 실천(micropolitical practices)’ 가능성을 검토하고, 이러한 로레티스의 주체 이론을 참조하는 로지 브라이도티(Rosi Bridotti)의 Nomadic Subjects(1994)를 경유하여 여성 주체가 젠더화/성차화되는 이중적인 위치를 살펴본다. 이들에 따르면 대문자 여성(Woman)과 소문자 여성들(women)이라는복수의 층위를 이행하는 여성 주체는 자신의 주체화 조건이기도 한 권력 구조의 내부와 외부 사이 비판적 공간을 창출할 수 있다. 이들의 작업은 포스트산업 이후 오늘날대중문화 속에 재현된 ‘여성의 몸’을 재사하는 데 있어 현재까지도 유효한 통찰을 제공한다. 이러한 맥락에서 바디 호러(body horror) 장르 영화 <서브스턴스>가 과잉된이미지로 재현하는 엘리자베스-수의 신체 변형은, 위와 같은 페미니즘 정치학에 실패한 여성 주체를 그리고 있다. 그러나 동시에 엘리자베스-수의 분열은 페미니즘 정치학의 가능 조건을 상상하도록 만드는 단초를 제공한다. 그녀의 끔찍한 최후는 불평등한 젠더 권력 구조 속 여성 주체의 위치성을 비판적으로 전경화하고 있기 때문이다. 나아가 <서브스턴스>와도 같은 현실 사회 속 여성들이 페미니즘 주체가 되는 걸 방해하고 있는 것이 무엇인지 질문한다. 이때 현대 미국 사회에서 작동하는 지배 테크놀로지로서 웰빙(well-being) 담론, 행복 각본(script of happiness), 잔인한 낙관주의등은 위와 같은 질문에 대한 답이 된다. 따라서 페미니즘 정치학의 관점에서 엘리자베스-수를 실패로 이끄는 구조적 요인들을 이 개념들을 통해 독해하고, 이러한 구조적 설명이 신자유주의 논리 아래 은폐되는 방식을 영화가 어떻게 폭로하고 있는 지분석한다. 위 개념들은 현대 미국 사회 속 젠더화된 권력 구조가 어떻게 여성을 지배규범 아래 관리하고, ‘건강’이라는 코드를 통해 여성의 신체를 상품화하며, 이로부터벗어난 이들을 사회적 긍정 혹은 승인으로부터 배제함으로써 여성이 욕망하는 방식이결정되는 과정을 설명해준다. 결과적으로 <서브스턴스>는 지배 각본 아래 놓인 여성주체의 자기파괴를 비판적으로 전경화함으로써, 이를 목격한 관객들로 하여금 그녀와다른 방식으로 욕망하기 위한 가능 조건을 상상하게 만든다. 이는 페미니즘 정치학의영화적 실천으로서 <서브스턴스>가 가진 가능성이다.

영문 초록

This paper explores the possibility of feminist political practice through the division and failure of the character Elizabeth-Sue represented in “The Substance” (2024). As a theoretical foundation, I examine the micropolitical practices of individual subjects as proposed by Teresa de Lauretis in Technologies of Gender (1987), and further engage Rosi Braidotti’s Nomadic Subjects (1994), which elaborates on de Lauretis’s subject theory. According to these feminists, the female subject—situated in the doubled location of gendered/sexed subjectivity— can move between the multiple location of Woman (capital W) and women (lowercase w), navigating a critical space between the inside and outside of the very power structures that constitute her. Their works continue to provide valuable insights for analyzing the representation of the female body in contemporary postindustrial popular culture. In this context, the grotesque bodily transformation of Elizabeth-Sue in the body horror film The Substance exemplifies a failed female subject in Feminist Political Perspective. Yet her division simultaneously offers the grounds for imagining the conditions of possibility for such politics. Her horrific demise critically foregrounds the location of the female subject within unequal gendered power structures. Furthermore, this film raises the question of what prevents women in society from becoming the female subject of feminism. To answer this, I examine dominant technologies in contemporary American society such as the discourse of ‘well-being’, ‘the script of happiness’, and ‘cruel optimism’. Through these concepts, I analyze the structural forces that drive Elizabeth-Sue toward failure and how “The Substance” exposes the ways such forces are concealed under neoliberal logics. These concepts help illuminate how gendered power structures controll women, commodify female bodies through the code of ‘health’, and marginalize those who deviate from these norms, ultimately shaping the ways women are allowed to desire. In conclusion, “The Substance” critically foregrounds the self-destruction of the female subject under dominant scripts, thereby prompting viewers to imagine alternative modes of desiring. This capacity to envision otherwise marks the film’s potential as a feminist political intervention.
