D. H. Lawrence is one of the most influential novelists in early 20th-century Britain. His masterpiece, Sons and Lovers, based on his autobiographical experiences in Eastwood, a mining town, demonstrates a keen awareness of the moral failures of industrial society. It delicately depicts the harsh realities under industrial capitalism: the devastation of the natural environment and the degradation of human relationships. In the novel, Lawrence focuses his writing on the relationship between man and woman, emphasizing the pain and helplessness that men and women endure in the relationship when they are in a state of mental and physical separation. This paper employs Ethical Literary Criticism to explore the ethical predicaments and choices in the relationship between man and woman faced by the main characters under the wave of industrial capitalism, revealing how the natural human nature centered on sexual psychology is ruthlessly destroyed under the pressure of mechanical civilization and ultimately highlighting Lawrence’s belief that only by establishing a new and harmonious relationship between man and woman can the humanity distorted by industrial civilization be truly restored.
