월정(月汀) 윤근수(尹根壽) ｢만록(漫錄)｣의 내용적 특징과 의의 - 중국 관련 기록을 중심으로

국문 초록

본고는 조선 중기의 문신인 월정(月汀) 윤근수(尹根壽, 1537~1616)의 『월정집(月汀集)』 별집 권4에 수록된 ｢만록(漫錄)｣ 가운데 중국 관련 기록을 중심으로 그 내용적 특징과 의의를 고찰하였다. 윤근수는 네 차례에 걸친 연경 사행을 통해 탁월한 외교적 역량을 발휘하였으며, 특히 명나라의 전후칠자(前後七子)로 대표되는 의고주의(擬古主義) 문학을 조선에 소개하고 전파하는 데 중요한 역할을 하였다. 이러한 외교 경험과 문학적 교류는 그의 문학세계에 깊은 영향을 미쳤으며, 이는 그의 문집 전반, 특히 ｢만록｣에 고스란히 반영되었다. ｢만록｣은 총 172칙으로 구성되어 있으며, 그 내용은 중국과 조선 양국에 걸친 광범위한 주제를 포괄하고 있다. 중국과 관련된 조목에서는 네 차례에 걸친 연경 사행 중 만난 인물들에 대한 소개를 비롯하여, 그때 경험한 다양한 일화와 당대 명나라 문단의 경향을 기록하였으며, 아울러 중국의 역사적 사실에 대한 고증, 지리･자연･풍속에 대한 설명, 그리고 시･문장･서법에 대한 평론 등을 담고 있다. 본고는 ｢만록｣에 수록된 조목 가운데 중국 관련 기록을 대상으로 그 내용적 특징을 고찰하였다. 첫째, 월정은 중국 사행 중에 만난 명나라 인물들을 소개하면서 직접 관찰한 그들의 생김새와 성품 등을 묘사하였고, 이들과 관련된 특별한 일화를 함께 수록하였다. 둘째, 월정은 중국의 영토와 지리, 역사적 유적지뿐만 아니라, 말투･속담･사물의 명칭･식생활 등 일상적인 풍속의 변화까지 폭넓게 기록하였다. 특히 문헌으로만 접하였던 동식물을 직접 보고 경험한 일화들은 주목할 만한 부분이다. 마지막으로, 중국 문인의 시와 문장, 서법에 대한 평론을 통해 그의 문예적 안목과 취향을 확인할 수 있었다. 중국 관련 기록의 전반적인 내용을 검토한 결과, 월정은 연경 사행과 광녕･요동 방문을 통해 자신이 직접 겪은 경험은 물론, 주변 인물들로부터 전해 들은 이야기까지도 충실히 기록하고자 하였던 것으로 보인다. 이러한 노력 덕분에 ｢만록｣에는 당시 조선 사신의 시각에서 관찰한 명나라의 인물･사회･문화･자연환경 등에 대한 다양한 정보가 담겨 있으며, 다른 문헌에서는 보기 어려운 독특한 일화와 생생한 기록이 다수 수록되어 있어 높은 자료적 가치를 지닌다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the content characteristics and significance of the records related to China in ｢Manrok(漫錄)｣, included in Volume 4 of the Supplementary Collection of 『Woljeongjip(月汀集)』, authored by Woljeong Yun Geun-su(尹根壽, 1537~1616), a prominent scholar-official of the mid-Joseon period. Yun Geun-su demonstrated outstanding diplomatic capabilities during his four missions to the Ming capital, Yanjing(present-day Beijing). Notably, he played a significant role in introducing and disseminating the Ming literary movement known as Archaism(擬古主義), represented by the Former and Latter Seven Masters(前後七子), to Joseon. His diplomatic experiences and literary exchanges had a profound influence on his literary world, which was vividly reflected throughout his collected works, particularly in ｢Manrok｣. ｢Manrok｣ consists of 172 records, covering a wide range of topics related to both China and Joseon. The sections concerning China include introductions to various figures encountered during the four diplomatic missions to Yanjing, accounts of diverse experiences, and records of contemporary literary trends in the Ming dynasty. Additionally, ｢Manrok｣ provides historical verifications, descriptions of geography, nature, and customs, as well as critical evaluations of poetry, prose, and calligraphy. This study focuses on the sections related to China in ｢Manrok｣ and examines content characteristics. First, Woljeong introduced Ming dynasty figures he met during his diplomatic missions, providing detailed descriptions of their appearances and personalities based on his direct observations. He also recorded special anecdotes related to these individuals. Second, Woljeong extensively recorded not only China’s territory, geography, and historical sites but also changes in customs such as dialects, proverbs, names of objects, and dietary habits. In particular, his firsthand experiences and anecdotes of flora and fauna, which he had previously known only through texts, are noteworthy. Lastly, through his critiques of Chinese poets’, writers’, and calligraphers’ works, Woljeong’s literary sensibility and aesthetic preferences could be confirmed. A comprehensive review of the China-related sections reveals that Woljeong diligently recorded not only his own experiences during the missions to Yanjing and visits to Guangning and Liaodong but also the stories he heard from others. As a result, ｢Manrok｣ contains diverse information about Ming dynasty figures, society, culture, and natural environment observed from the perspective of a Joseon envoy. Furthermore, it includes numerous unique anecdotes and vivid records rarely found in other historical sources, thereby holding significant value as a historical and cultural resource.
