국문 초록

Contemporary furniture design increasingly demands approaches that surpass static functions and monolithic forms, mirroring the complex stratifications of modern existence. This research investigates the notion of “overlapping” as both a formative principle and practical methodology within furniture design. Building upon philosophical and artistic theoretical frameworks, this study conceptualizes overlapping as a structural mechanism whereby disparate elements coexist, interact, and produce emergent organizational systems. The investigation establishes two principal classifications—morphological overlapping and operational overlapping—and examines exemplary projects from the 1990s onward that demonstrate these methodologies. Through detailed case analysis, overlapping is demonstrated to dismantle conventional distinctions between aesthetic and functional dimensions, facilitating perceptual suspension, hybridized functionalities, and stratified interpretative possibilities. The research outcomes indicate that overlapping transcends mere stylistic application, functioning instead as an operational framework that enhances user experiential potential, spatial responsiveness, and cultural significance. Consequently, this study establishes overlapping as an essential theoretical construct for reconceptualizing furniture design across both experimental and practical applications.
