국문 초록

The Thonet No.14 chair, designed by Micheal Thonet in 1859, made a remarkable revolution in furniture industry by its innovative assembly structure which allowed efficient production and shipment. Later, Ikea accelerated the spread of self-assembly furniture by introducing flat-pack packaging, allowing customers not only to buy furniture but also to transport and assemble it by themselves. Starting from period of industrial revolution, furniture design has continuously evolved alongside changes in technology and society. The furniture design has been changed not only on the appearance, but also how the furniture is made, sold, and used, having strong impact on both production methods and consumer behavior. Nowadays, interest in self-assembly furniture is growing continuosly, driven by the changes on social and economic aspects as well as environmental concerns. Compared to fully assembled furniture, self-assembly furniture is more efficient in terms of transportation, storage and delivery. It also contributes to environmental sustainability by requiring less packaging, space efficiency during shipping, and ultimately reducing carbon emissions. This study focuses on designing self-assembly furniture that reflects today’s social demands and evolving lifestyles, suggesting not only practical but also sustainable solutions.
