존 마스턴의 희곡 『네덜란드 매춘부』는 17세기 사회의 매춘부에 대한 이중 잣대를 비판하고, 깊이 뿌리내린 가부장적 구조를 드러내는 풍자극이다. 마스턴은 날카로운 희극적 요소를 통해 동시대 사회 규범의 부조리와 위선을 강조한다. 이러한 비판은 현대에서도 재조명되고 있으며, 특히 2013년 요크 대학교의 디지털 공연을 통해 현대적 맥락 속에서 재해석되었다. 극 중 프란세스치나는 버림받고 복수를 꾀하지만 단순한 피해자로 그려지지 않고, 오히려 상황을 전략적으로 조작하는 지적이고 능동적인 인물로 나타난다. 이에 반해 크리스피넬라는 남성의 위선을 강하게 비판하고 성적 자기결정권을 주장하며, 사랑과 결혼에 대한 진보적인 시각을 제시한다. 마스턴의 풍자는 이처럼 사회적 억압을 비판하는 수단으로 작용하며, 이 작품은 현대 공연과 디지털 매체를 통한 재구성을 통해 오늘날에도 여전히 강한 울림을 준다.

Reimagining Love in John Marston’s The Dutch Courtesan. John Marston’s The Dutch Courtesan is a satirical play that critiques the double standards of seventeenth-century society regarding courtesans and exposes its deeply entrenched patriarchal structure. Through sharp comedic elements, Marston highlights the absurdities and hypocrisies of contemporary social norms. This critique has been revisited and reinterpreted in modern contexts, most notably in the 2013 digital production by the University of York. In the play, Franceschina—though abandoned and seeking revenge—is not merely portrayed as a victim but as a highly intelligent and proactive figure who strategically manipulates her circumstances. In contrast, Crispinella serves as a vocal critic of male hypocrisy and an advocate for sexual agency, offering a progressive perspective on love and marriage. Marston’s use of satire thus functions as a vehicle for interrogating social oppression, and the play continues to resonate today through contemporary performances and digital remediation.
