국문 초록
This study has two primary objectives: first, to demonstrate the harmonious integration of Integrational Linguistics and film through discourse analysis; and second, to empower EFL teachers to successfully incorporate films into their classroom practices. To this end, nine utterances exchanged between Carl, the father, and Percy, his young son, extracted from three distinct scenes of the American road comedy-drama film, Chef (Favreau, 2014), were analyzed. Employing discourse analysis on these utterances, this study investigates how Integrational Linguistics can effectively convey language-related knowledge to teachers while preserving the engaging nature of cinematic storytelling. Table 1 illustrates the rejection of fixed symbols and its connection to contextualism through ‘twiter (now X).’ Table 2 reveals how the meaning of ‘It’s cool’ comes alive by considering its context, speaker, and psychological state. Table 3 showcases Percy’s brief rejection of Carl’s ‘Is that like texting?’ as a refusal of language myths, and Carl’s ‘Sign me up’ demonstrates the Principle of Contemporality. Analysis of these short exchanges from Chef reveals a method for utilizing films effectively in brief classroom segments, enabling the simultaneous assimilation of cinematic narrative and linguistic knowledge through discourse analysis. This study aspires to instill confidence in teachers regarding film integration in their teaching.
