While Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba has often been interpreted as a conventional Japanese fantasy narrative grounded in swordsmanship, demon folklore, and premodern values, this paper contends that the series also embeds a distinct steampunk aesthetic, reconfigured through a culturally specific Japanese lens. By examining three key elements—the Mugen Train, the urban spaces of Asakusa and Yoshiwara, and the Nichirin swords wielded by members of the Demon Slayer Corps—this study investigates how the anime negotiates the tension between the rationality of modern technology and the mysticism of premodern belief systems. The Mugen Train, emblematic of Japan’s early industrialization, paradoxically functions as a liminal site of psychological entrapment and supernatural confrontation. The depictions of Asakusa and Yoshiwara further illustrate transitional urban spaces wherein tradition and modernity collide, mirroring the socio-cultural flux characteristic of the Taishō period. Meanwhile, the Nichirin swords—crafted from mythologized ores and attuned to the spiritual dispositions of their users—operate as “out-of-place artifacts” that fuse emotional resonance with technological imagination. Through these motifs, Demon Slayer articulates a mode of “Japanese steampunk” in which modernity is not opposed to mysticism but rather reinterpreted through it, thereby generating a hybrid symbolic system where rational progress and irrational wonder coexist in a culturally resonant aesthetic.

영문 초록

『鬼滅の刃』は一見すると伝統的な和風剣戟アニメであるが、その舞台設定や技術描写にはスチームパンク的な要素が顕著に表れている。本稿では、作品中に登場する｢無限列車｣、東京·浅草および吉原という都市空間、そして鬼殺隊の武器｢日輪刀｣の三点に注目し、それらがいかにしてスチームパンク的感性を形成しているかを論じた。 まず、無限列車は産業化の象徴たる蒸気機関車でありながら、夢と悪夢、血鬼術の空間として機能し、技術と非合理の衝突を描く舞台となっている。浅草や吉原といった近代都市空間もまた、西洋化·電化が進む一方で伝統的な価値観と欲望が交錯する｢時代の狭間｣の象徴として描かれる。さらに、日輪刀は特殊鉱石から鍛えられ、持ち主の属性に反応するなど、非現実的な技術的特徴を持ち、オーパーツ的存在としても解釈可能である。 これらの要素は、技術と感情、近代と前近代、合理と非合理が交差するスチームパンク的世界観を支えており、『鬼滅の刃』が日本的スチームパンクの一形態として読み解ける可能性を示している。
