『계서잡록』 소재 열부 박씨 이야기의 서사화 과정과 서술 방식

국문 초록

본고는 『계서잡록』에 실린 열부 박씨 송사 사건에 관한 이야기를 본격적으로 분석함으로써 이 이야기가 다른 자료들의 정보를 어떻게 활용해 서사화한 것이며, 그 서술 방식은 어떠했는지를 살펴보았다. 『계서잡록』의 이 이야기는 여러 야담집에 실려 있는 열부 박씨 이야기들 가운데 최초로 만들어진 것인데, 이후 여러 야담집과 근대의 야담집 및 신문 연재소설 등으로 거듭 수용되었다. 그 과정에서 이 이야기는 대개 그대로 전재되었지만, 간혹 변용되기도, 한글로 번역되기도 했다. 이 이야기는 여러 야담집에 실려 있는 열부 박씨 이야기들 가운데 원형에 해당하는 텍스트이면서, 지금까지 확인되는 열부 박씨 송사 사건에 관한 자료 가운데 가장 활발하고 지속적으로 향유된 텍스트였다. 이에 본고는 이 이야기가 기존의 여러 정보들을 수용해 이루어졌음을 살피고, 이 사건을 다양한 방식으로 기록한 다수의 공적(公的) 기록 및 사적(私的) 기록을 고찰하였다. 이를 바탕으로 이 이야기를 분석한 결과, 실재 사건이 야담집에 실린 한 편의 이야기로 서사화되는 과정에서 다양한 정보들이 단순화되고 집약되고, 박씨의 형상이 열부의 전형에 보다 가까워졌으며, 이적을 통해 박씨가 열부로 강조되고, 만석이 서사 초반부터 주요 인물로 다뤄졌음을 알 수 있었다. 이에 이러한 서술 방식은 피해자인 박씨를 “열부”로서 더 잘 애도하고, 만석의 충심을 더 크게 상찬하려는 나름 진지하고 좋은 의도에서 이루어졌을 것이지만, 이희평의 애초 의도와는 별개로 서사적으로는 다른 효과를 낳기도 했음을 분석하였다. 단순하고 집약적인 서술 방식을 통해 독자에게 그 내용을 보다 쉽게 전달하고, 박씨와 만석을 정형화된 열부와 충노로 고쳐 그려냄으로써 독자는 이 사건과의 심리적 거리를 확보하고 의구심을 해소해 이 내용을 흥미로운 “이야기”로 비교적 가볍게 접할 수 있었으며, 이적의 강조를 통해 흥미성을 제고시킬 수 있었다는 사실을 규명한 것이다. 이런 서술 방식은 이희평의 의도와 별개로 이 내용이 여러 텍스트에 수용되며 근대에 이르기까지 지속적으로 향유되는 데 주요한 기반이 되었을 것이므로 이에 이러한 서술 방식은 현실에서 벌어진 심각하고 충격적인 사건이 흥미롭고 부담 없는 “이야기”로 전환되어 지속적으로 향유되는 데 나름의 기여를 했다고 이해되었다.

영문 초록

This paper examined how this story used and changed the information of other materials by analyzing the story of the case of the Yeolbu(烈婦) Park in the Gyeseo-Japrok Since its creation at the Gyeseo-Japrok in this story has been repeatedly accepted as a series of stories, modern stories, and newspapers. In the process, the story has been reprinted, transformed, recreated, and translated into Korean. Therefore, it is confirmed that this story has been the most actively and continuously enjoyed text among the data on the case of the Yeolbu(烈婦) Park affair confirmed so far. This paper examined that this story was made by accepting various existing information, and carefully examined a number of public and private records that recorded this event in various ways. As a result of analyzing this story based on this, it was found that various information was simplified and concentrated in the process of describing real events as stories, Park changed into a typical Yeolbu(烈婦), and Manseok further strengthened the character of a faithful servant as the protagonist of the narrative Thus, these changes were made with the intention of better mourning the victim, Park, as a Yeolbu(烈婦), and further praising the loyalty of the full seats, but they could not convey the real problem of reality. However, this narrative style turns out to have its own narrative strengths. Simple and focused narrative style is easy to deliver content to readers, changing character of Park and Man-seok have secured psychological distancing for readers to access content with relatively light “story,” and mystery changes by Park's suicide have been shown to increase interest in the text. It can be inferred that the narrative method identified in this story was accepted in various texts and contributed to continuous enjoyment until modern times. Therefore, this narrative method was understood as its own narrative strategy, which turned a serious and shocking event that took place in reality into an interesting and unburdened 'story.'
