<구운몽>의 서사적 변주와 전기소설적 성격 - 백능파 서사를 중심으로

국문 초록

이 글은 백능파 서사의 전통과 변주를 통하여 <구운몽>의 문학사적 의의를 살피는 데 목적을 두었다. 이를 위해 <유의전>과 백능파 서사의 문학적 구도를 살피고, 백능파 서사가 <유의전>을 어떻게 변주하였는지 고찰하였다. 이 변주를 통하여 <구운몽>의 소설사적 의의를 검토하였다. 첫째, <유의전>과 백능파 서사의 문학적인 구도를 확인하였다. <유의전>과 백능파 서사 모두 현실에서 가상으로, 가상에서 현실을 오가며 작품을 형상화했다. 그러는 중에 두 작품 모두 현실에서의 결핍이 초월계를 통하여 충족되도록 했다. 이것은 백능파 서사가 선행하는 <유의전>을 변주하여 빚어진 결과이다. 즉 동정용녀와 유의의 애정담과 동일하게 동정용녀의 동생인 백능파와 양소유의 결연담을 재창조여 발생한 일이다. 둘째, 백능파 서사의 문학적 변주를 검토하였다. 백능파 서사는 <유의전>에 연원을 두었지만 공간과 인물, 그리고 구현된 주제 등에서 차별성을 보인다. 먼저 가상공간인 백룡담을 새로 설정하여 인물의 성격을 강화하였다. 백룡담을 통해 백능파의 정절의식을 고취했고, 양소유도 문무를 겸비한 영웅인물로 형상화했다. 다음으로 <유의전>에서는 미온적이었던 혼사장애가 백능파 서사에서는 심각한 갈등 요인으로 작용하도록 했다. 그만큼 긴장된 사건을 추동하는 요인으로 혼사장애를 활용한 것이다. 끝으로 왜곡된 유교 이념, 즉 세속적인 욕망이 <유의전>보다 덜한 반면에 유교의 관념에 따른 여성인물의 자의식은 한층 강화하였다. 셋째, 백능파 서사를 통해 본 <구운몽>의 소설사적 위상을 살펴보았다. <구운몽>은 다양한 소설의 하위 유형을 다루었다. 그중의 하나가 바로 백능파 서사이다. 이를 기준으로 보면 <구운몽>은 기존에 구축된 다양한 소설 유형을 계승하면서 그것을 유기적으로 직조하여 종합적인 작품으로 형상화했음을 알 수 있다. 이것이 <옥루몽>에 와서는 여성인물을 중심으로 사건의 독립성을 강화하다가 마침내는 <강남홍>·<벽성선> 등의 단편소설로 유통되기에 이른 것이다. 따라서 백능파 서사를 기준으로 <구운몽>의 창작 경위와 소설사적 의미를 짐작할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to examine the creative process and literary- historical significance of Goounmong through the tradition and variations of the Baekneungpa narrative. To this end, I examine the structure of Yuuijeon and the Baekneungpa narrative, and examine how the Baekneungpa narratives varied Yuuijeon. Based on these literary variations, I examine the Novel-historical significance of Goounmong. The discussion thus far can be summarized as follows. First, we examined the literary structure of the and Baekneungpa narratives. Both Yuuijeon and the Baekneungpa narratives oscillate between reality and fiction, and back again, shaping their works. In doing so, both works seek to satisfy a lack in reality through the fictional world. This is a result of the Baekneungpa narrative's variation on Yuuijeon. In other words, it was possible to recreate the story of Baekneungpa and Yangsoyu's marriage in Goounmong, similar to the love story between Dongjeongyeongnyeo and Yuui in Yuuijeon. Second, we examined literary variations on the Baekneungpa narrative. While the Baekneungpa narrative draws on the Yuuijeon, it differs in its setting, characters, and themes. First, the fictional Baekryongdam was newly established to strengthen the characterization of the characters. Through this narrative, the Baekneungpa's sense of chastity was reinforced, and Yang So-yu was portrayed as a hero who encompassed both civil and military affairs. Next, the marital obstacle, which was lukewarm in Yuuijeon, became a serious source of conflict in the Baekneungpa narrative. This obstacle was utilized as a driving force for such tense events. Finally, the distorted Confucian ideology, namely, worldly desires, was less urgent than in Yuuijeon, while the emphasis was on sexual and playful pleasures while reinforcing women's sense of chastity. Third, I examined the historical position of Goounmong through the lens of the Baekneungpa narrative. Goounmong explored various novel subtypes, one of which is the Baekneungpa narrative. Looking at this as a criterion, we can see that Goounmong inherited various established novel types while organically weaving them together to form a comprehensive work. This process, which centered on female characters in Okrumong, strengthened the independence of the story, eventually leading to its distribution in short stories such as Gangnamhong and Byeokseongseon. Therefore, the Baekneungpa narrative can be used to infer the creative process and historical significance of Goounmong.
