국문 초록

스포츠 웹툰은 경기와 경쟁을 주제로 한 디지털 기반의 이야기 형식으로, 세로 스크롤 화면과 컷 구성, 여백 처리 등 웹툰 특유의 표현 방식을 활용하는 동시에 전통 스포츠 만화의 시각적 요소와 연출 기법을 계승하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 스포츠 웹툰의 배경을 공간배경과 비공간배경으로 나누어 분석하였다. 형태 측면에서 공간배경은 전체 배경의 다수를 차지하며, 경기장 내 인물의 위치와 동선, 위상 관계를 투시 기법을 통해 사실적으로 재현하여 경기의 리얼리티와 서사의 흐름을 강화한다. 반면 장식배경은 긴장·흥분·좌절 등 감정을 색과 패턴으로 강조하며, 무배경·클로즈업·오브제는 장면 전환과 심리적 몰입을 유도하고 독자의 시선을 집중시킨다. 색상은 경기의 속도감과 극적 분위기를 조절하는 중요한 요소로, 특정 장면에서는 채도와 명도의 대비를 통해 선수와 공, 관중석 등 핵심 요소를 부각시키며, 작품별로 고유의 긴장감 있는 무드를 형성한다. 질감의 표현은 상대적으로 적지만, 경기장의 질감이나 땀, 공의 운동감 등을 묘사함으로써 사실성과 몰입감을 보강한다. 이와 같이 스포츠 웹툰의 배경은 단순한 공간 재현을 넘어 심리 묘사와 감정 고조, 극적 연출의 기능을 수행하며, 이는 스포츠 웹툰이 전통적 만화 서사를 계승하면서도 디지털 매체의 특성을 활용해 독자적 시각 문법을 구축하고 있음을 보여준다.

영문 초록

Sports webtoons are digital narrative forms centered on games and competition, making use of vertical scrolling, panel composition, and spacing unique to webtoons, while also inheriting visual elements and expressive techniques from traditional sports comics. This study categorizes the backgrounds in sports webtoons into spatial and non-spatial types for analysis. In terms of form, spatial backgrounds occupy the majority, realistically depicting the positions, movements, and hierarchical relationships of characters within the arena through perspective techniques, thereby enhancing both the realism of the match and the flow of the narrative. In contrast, decorative backgrounds highlight emotions such as tension, excitement, or frustration through colors and patterns, while non-backgrounds, close-ups, and objects contribute to scene transitions, psychological immersion, and the focus of the reader’s gaze. Color functions as a key device for adjusting the dramatic atmosphere and conveying the sense of speed in the game. By employing contrasts in saturation and brightness, important elements such as players, the ball, or the audience are emphasized, establishing a distinctive mood of tension in each work. Although texture appears less frequently than form or color, it is sometimes employed to represent the materiality of the stadium, sweat, or the dynamic motion of the ball, thereby reinforcing realism and reader engagement. Collectively, the backgrounds in sports webtoons go beyond mere spatial representation, serving to depict psychological states, intensify emotions, and produce dramatic effects. These findings demonstrate that sports webtoons not only inherit the narrative tradition of print comics but also establish an independent visual grammar by exploiting the unique characteristics of the digital medium.
