국문 초록

벤야민의 폭력과 역사에 대한 성찰은, 국가-법-폭력의 관계와 그 변화의 가능성을 교육과 함께 사유하는 작업의 토대가 될 수 있다. 그의 폭력비판론에 따르면 법은 근본적으로 폭력에 의해 정립되고 보존된다. 이런 폭력은 법의 폭력적 기원과 작동을 신비한 것으로 만들고 권력을 영속화한다. 벤야민의 역사철학은 유대교 신학을 도입하여 진보로서의 역사를 상정하던 기계적 유물론에 맞선다. 벤야민에 따르면, 피억압자들의 세속적 구원인 해방을 위한 혁명은 역사의 필연적 결과가 아니라 역사의 단절이자 폭파이다. 해방을 위해 필요한 것은 현재 피억압자들을 혁명적 실천에 나설 수 있게 하는, 과거 피억압자들의 희생에 대한 기억이다. 선조들이 희생했던 이미지를 포착하고 기억하도록 하는 작업은 교육적 과정이기도 하다. 그러므로 기억의 교육은 피억압자들의 해방을 위한 실천을 촉진한다. 현실에서 피억압자들의 기억을 위한 교육은, 폭력에 의존하는 동시에 폭력에 취약한 자유주의적 정치체와 이에 대한 제도정치의 대안이 같은 정치체의 재생산으로 귀결되는 악순환에 균열을 내고, 언제가 도래할 피억압자들이 구원되는 ‘최후의 날’을 앞당길 수 있다.

영문 초록

Benjamin’s reflections on violence and history provide a foundation for examining the relationship between the state-law-violence, and the possibility of its change along with education. In his critique of violence, law is fundamentally established and preserved by violence. This violence obscures its own origin and operation of the law, thereby perpetuating power. Benjamin’s philosophy of history incorporates Jewish theology to resist mechanical materialism which assumes history as progress. For Benjamin, the revolution for emancipation, conceived as the secular salvation of the oppressed, is not a necessary outcome of history but a rupture and explosion of history. What enables historical salvation is the memory of the sacrifices of the oppressed in the past, which empowers the present oppressed to engage in revolutionary practice. Capturing these images of the sacrifices of our ancestors and cultivating memory is itself an educational process. Therefore, the education of memory facilitates the practice for the emancipation of the oppressed. In reality, education oriented toward the memory of the oppressed can break the vicious cycle of the liberal constitution, reliant on violence and vulnerable to violence, and the alternative of institutional politics to it, which ends up reproducing the liberal constitution. Such education may help bring about the “day of judgement,” when the oppressed attain salvation.
