국문 초록

본 논문은 에드바르트 베르거(Edward Berger) 감독의 영화 <콘클라베(Conclave, 2024)>에 나타난 포스트모던적 사상을 분석하고, 그것이 현대 교회에 미치는 영향을 신학적으로 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이 영화는 단순한 ‘종교영화’로 규정하기에는 다양한 메시지와 철학적 함의를 담고 있으며, 특히 포스트모던 사상과 밀접하게 연관된 주제들을 다루고 있다. 영화의 내러티브는 교황 선출이라는 종교적 의식을 중심으로 전개되지만, 사건의 전개와 반전, 그리고 인물들의 갈등 속에는 포스트모던 사유의 다양한 층위가 드러난다. 본 연구는 <콘클라베>를 철학적이고 종교적인 함의를 지닌 하나의 ‘텍스트’로 설정하고, 그 속에 내재된 사상적 요소를 분석한다. 이 영화에는 두드러지게 발견되는 포스트모던 철학의 사상은 ‘거대서사의 붕괴’, ‘이항대립적 이원론의 해체’, ‘지식과 권력의 상관성’, ‘차이와 다양성’, ‘자아의 우연성’과 ‘연대’ 개념 등이다. 이것은 20세기의 대표적인 포스트모던 철학자들, 대표적으로 리오타르, 데리다, 들뢰즈, 푸코, 로티 등이 주장하는 사상이다. 본 연구는 영화라는 ‘매개’를 통하여 현대 교회에 미치는 대표적인 포스트모던 사상과 그 영향력을 간접적으로 조명해 볼 수 있을 것이다. 아울러 기독교가 직면한 사상적 도전과 그에 대한 신학적 응답의 가능성을 탐구한다. 따라서 본 논문은 철학적 비판과 신학적 성찰을 교차시키면서, 포스트모던 시대의 기독교적 지도자상과 종교적 권위의 문제를 재고하는 데 중요한 학문적 의의를 지닌다.

영문 초록

This study aims to provide a philosophical analysis of the postmodern thought embodied in Edward Berger’s film Conclave (2024) and to examine its theological implications for the contemporary church. The film, far from being classified merely as a “religious film,” contains a variety of messages and philosophical dimensions, particularly themes that are closely intertwined with postmodern thought. Although its narrative unfolds around the religious ritual of papal election, the unfolding events, unexpected reversals, and conflicts among the characters reveal multiple layers of postmodern reflection. This paper treats Conclave as a “text” endowed with philosophical and religious significance and seeks to analyze the intellectual motifs embedded within it. The prominent postmodern philosophical concepts identified in the film include the “collapse of grand narratives,” the “deconstruction of binary oppositions,” the “interrelation of knowledge and power,” the “philosophy of difference and plurality,” and the notions of the “contingency of selfhood” and “solidarity.” These represent the core ideas articulated by major twentieth-century postmodern philosophers such as Jean-François Lyotard, Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault, and Richard Rorty. This study seeks to indirectly shed light on prominent postmodern ideologies and their influence on the contemporary church through the medium of film. Furthermore, it explores the ideological challenges faced by Christianity and the possibilities for theological responses to those challenges. By bringing philosophical critique into dialogue with theological reflection, this paper contributes to a reconsideration of Christian leadership and the problem of religious authority in the postmodern age, thereby underscoring its academic significance.
