개념적으로 타당한 논증은 형식적으로 타당한 논증인가?

국문 초록

교양 교육 차원의 논리 교육에서 개념적으로 타당한 논증은 의사소통과 논증 분석 그리고 비판적사고 훈련을 위해 그 특징과 의미가 해명될 필요가 있다. 논증은 명제들의 집합으로, 결론과 그것을뒷받침 하는 전제로 이루어져 있는데, 전제가 결론을 필연적으로 뒷받침하면 연역논증으로, 전제가결론을 개연적으로 뒷받침하면 귀납논증으로 구분된다. 연역논증 중에서 전제가 결론을 필연적으로뒷받침하는 논증을 연역적으로 타당한 논증이라 한다. 일반적으로 연역논증이 타당한 이유는 주로논증이 가진 일정한 형식 때문이라고 설명되곤 한다. 그런데 연역적으로 타당한 논증에는 형식 때문에타당한 논증 말고도 전제와 결론을 구성하는 개념의 의미 때문에 타당한 논증, 즉 개념적으로 타당한논증도 있어 보인다. 개념적으로 타당한 논증은 일정한 형식을 갖지 않는데도 불구하고 전제가 참이면서결론이 거짓인 것이 불가능해 보인다. 이 점은 개념적으로 타당한 논증을 어떻게 이해하는 것이 적절한지에 대한 해명을 필요로 한다. 이에 대한 여러 대안을 검토하면서 개념적으로 타당한 논증의 본성과실천적인 함의가 무엇인지를 밝혀보고자 한다.

영문 초록

In the context of liberal arts education, conceptually valid arguments need to be clarified in terms of their characteristics and significance, as they play an important role in communication, argument analysis, and the development of critical thinking skills. An argument is a set of propositions that consists of a conclusion and the premise that supports it. If the premise inevitably supports the conclusion, it is divided into a deductive argument, and if the premise probably supports the conclusion, it is divided into a inductive argument. Among deductive arguments, the argument in which the premise inevitably supports the conclusion is called a deductively valid argument. It is often explained that the reason why a deductive argument is valid is mainly because of its certain form. However, in addition to a valid argument by the form, there seems to be a valid argument, that is, a conceptually valid argument because of the meaning of the concepts that constitute the premise and the conclusion. Although a conceptually valid argument does not have a certain form, it seems impossible for the premise to be true and the conclusion to be false. This requires an explanation as to whether it is appropriate to classify a conceptually valid argument into a deductively valid argument. Therefore, by examining various alternatives to how to understand a conceptually valid argument, I would like to clarify the nature and practical implications of the conceptually valid argument.
