국문 초록

본 논문은 20세기 유성기 음반 잡가에 나타난 죽음 인식을 ‘호모 모르탈리스’의 관점에서 살펴보고자 했다. 일제에 의해 국권을 강탈당한 시기, 죽음의실존적 공포에 맞서 어떠한 방식으로든 삶을 영위하는 이들이 있었다. 필자는 그들을 특별하게 ‘호모 모르탈리스’라 부르고자 했다. 여기서 ‘호모 모르탈리스’는 숙명적인 죽음에 맞서 고군분투하는 삶에 의미를 부여하는 행위자를 의미한다. 이를 확인하는 작업으로 유성기 음반에 실린 전통적 가창 양식가운데 죽음 모티프가 비교적 다채롭게 드러난 잡가를 대상으로 하였다. 그 결과, 잡가에 나타난 ‘호모 모르탈리스’는 사후세계가 존재한다는 믿음을 받아들이고 있었다. 종교에서 발현한 체계화된 사후세계는 다가오는 죽음의 공포로부터 자신들을 보호해 줄 수 있었기 때문이다. 일제에 의해 핍박받던 민중은 공동체의 윤리인 종교에 의지해 죽음 공포나 두려움 같은 심리적 갈등을 해소하고자 했다. 이러한 종교적 세계관은 그들이 원하는 사후세계로 갈 수 있다는 희망 아래 전개될 수 있었다. 또한 육체가 소멸해도 영속적인 영혼의 개념을 활용하여 죽음의 공포를 벗어나기도 했다. 여기에는 실제 불멸성에 대한 인식이 내재하고 있었다. 현실과 연결된 자아가 죽어서도 환생을 통해 연속성을 지닌다는 원리이다. 이처럼 유성기 음반 잡가에 나타난 죽음 인식은 일제강점기 실존적 죽음 공포에 대응하기 위해 종교적 세계관과 환생이라는 영속적인 자아를 통해 이루고자 했다. 결국 유성기 음반 잡가에는 죽음에 대한 인식과 더불어 삶을 살아가는 방식을 통렬히 성찰할 수밖에 없었던 당대 대중의 의식이 담겨 있었다. 따라서 일제강점기 ‘호모 모르탈리스’적 면모를 확인하는 이번 연구는 당대인들의 삶을 지배하는 문화적 세계관과 함께 그들의 목표와 지향점 등을 탐구해 궁극적으로 우리가 어떻게 살아야 할 것인지에 대한 해답을 찾아가는데 유효한 시사점이 될 것으로 보인다.

영문 초록

This thesis focused on the era of Japanese colonial era and attempted to examine the death perception in the korean gramophone published at that time from the perspective of 'Homo Mortalis'. At the time when the national authority was robbed by the Japanese imperialism, there were people who lived their lives in some way against the existential fear of death. I tried to call them 'Homo Mortalis' in particular. Here, 'Homo Mortalis' refers to an actor who gives meaning to a life struggling against a fateful death. As a work to confirm this, among the traditional singing styles published on the korean gramophone, the death motif was relatively colorful Japga. As a result, the perception of death in a korean gramophone Japga was based on a belief in the afterlife. This is because the systematic afterlife expressed in religion was able to protect themselves from the fear of death. The people who were persecuted by the Japanese tried to resolve psychological conflicts such as fear of death and fear by relying on religion, the ethics of the community. This religious worldview could be developed in the hope of going to the afterlife they wanted. In addition, even if the body disappears, the concept of a permanent soul was used to escape the fear of death. There was also an inherent perception of real immortality. This is because he believed that the self connected to reality had continuity even after death. As a result, I was able to overcome the fear of death in reality under the belief that I could continue to stay in the real world even after death. In this way, 'Homo Mortalis', which appeared in a korean gramophone Japga, tried to achieve through a permanent soul concept of reincarnation along with a religious worldview to cope with the fear of existential death in Japanese colonial era. In the end, the perception of death is felt in the songs, which was popular in Japanese colonial era, because the lyrics of the song, which expressed the way of life in response to the terrible tragedy, were comforting and sympathetic to the people of the time. This is the result of the song's public consciousness, which had no choice but to reflect on the way of life along with the perception of death. Therefore, the study, which confirms the “Homo Mortalis” aspect of the korean gramophon Japga, is expected to be a valid implication for exploring the cultural worldview that dominates the lives of the people of the day and their goals and directions to ultimately find answers on how we should live.
