This study explores the effectiveness of ChatGPT-assisted vocabulary learning in university-level English reading classes. Pre- and post-tests were administered to evaluate the differential impact on learners’ comprehension abilities according to English proficiency levels. Paired-sample t-tests, ANOVA, and post-hoc analysis were conducted to compare learners’ performance in vocabulary and reading before and after ChatGPT-assisted classes. The findings of this study suggest that ChatGPT-assisted vocabulary and reading sessions were effective. Statistical analysis demonstrated a significant enhancement in learners’ academic outcomes. In addition, the lower-level group exhibited a higher degree of improvement in achievement than the intermediate and advanced groups. This suggests that ChatGPT-based English instruction significantly enhances the foundational comprehension among lower-level learners and supports their comprehensive language learning outcomes.
