충무공 이순신 정신의 현대적 함의

국문 초록

충무공 이순신의 정신은 시대마다 조금씩 달리 강조되었다. 조선왕조 시대에는 ‘충의(忠義)의 정신’이, 일제 강점기에는 민족애(民族愛) 정신이 강조되었다. 대한민국 수립 이후 박정희 전 대통령은 충무공 정신을 ‘민족 지도 이념’으로 간주하여 민족 중흥의 정신적 토대로 삼았다. 이때 이은상의 ‘충무공 5대 정신’, 조성도의 ‘충무공 5대 정신’이 제기되었다. 그러나 시대가 지나면서 모두 역사의 저편으로 사라졌다. 특정한 권력자의 관심에 의해 제기된 시대적 산물이었기 때문이다. 그렇다면 시간과 공간을 넘어 현재에도 미래에도 수용되고, 활용할 수 있는 ‘충무공 정신’은 무엇일까? 이 글에서 필자는 시대에 국한된 ‘충신 이순신’, ‘영웅 이순신’, ‘민족 지도 이념으로서의 이순신’이 아니라 ‘리더 이순신’에 초점을 맞추어 충무공 5대 정신을 새롭게 추출하였다. 한국인들은 보편적으로 리더에게 실력(전문성)과 인품(도덕성)을 조화롭게 겸비할 것을 요구한다. 이에 착안하여 먼저 이순신의 실력(전문성)에 해당하는 정신 요소로 ① 탁월한 지략(智略)으로 이겨놓고 싸우는 ‘선승구전(先勝求戰)의 정신’, ② 변화에 주도적으로 대응한 ‘창의·혁신의 정신’을 추출하였다. 그리고 인품(도덕성)에 해당하는 정신 요소로 ③ 불의와 타협하지 않고 정의에 죽고 사는 ‘의리지향(義理志向)의 정신’, ④ 나라와 백성을 진정 사랑한 ‘애국·애민의 정신’을 추출하였다. 그리고 마지막으로 ⑤ 대화와 설득으로 한 마음, 한 뜻이 되게 만든 ‘수평소통의 정신’을 추가하였다. 리더는 홀로 무엇을 하는 것이 아니라 언제나 구성원들과 함께 한 마음, 한 뜻으로 조직의 임무를 완수하는 사람이기 때문이다. 충무공 이순신 제독이 ‘신(新) 충무공 5대 정신’을 통해 현재에도, 미래에도 주목을 받는 ‘리더 이순신’으로 재탄생하기를 기대해 본다.

영문 초록

Chungmugong(忠武公) Yi Sun-sin's spirit has been emphasized in different ways throughout history. During the Joseon Dynasty, it was the spirit of loyalty, while during the Japanese occupation, it was the spirit of nationalism. After the establishment of the Republic of Korea, former President Park Chung-hee regarded the spirit of Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin as the ‘ideology of national leadership’ and used it as the spiritual foundation for national rejuvenation. At that time, Lee Eun-sang's ‘the Five Great Spirits of Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin’ and Cho Seong-do's ‘the Five Great Spirits of Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin’ were proposed. However, as time passed, all of these disappeared into the annals of history because they were products of their time, raised due to the interest of specific rulers. So, what is the Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin's spirit that can be accepted and utilized beyond time and space, both in the present and the future? In this article, the author focuses on ‘Yi Sun-sin as a leader’ rather than ‘Yi Sun-sin as a loyal subject’, ‘Yi Sun-sin as a hero’, or ‘Yi Sun-sin as a national leadership ideology’, and reinterprets ‘the Five Great Spirits of Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin’. Koreans generally expect leaders to harmoniously possess both competence (professionalism) and character (morality). Drawing on this, the author first identified the mental elements corresponding to Yi Sun-sin's competence (professionalism) as: ① the spirit of ‘seeking victory before battle(先勝求戰)’, which involves winning through superior strategy; and ② the spirit of ‘creativity and innovation(創意·革新)’, which involves proactively responding to change. For character (morality), we identified the following mental elements: ③ the spirit of ‘righteousness and integrity(義理志向)’, which refuses to compromise with injustice and is willing to die for justice, and ④ the spirit of ‘patriotism and love for the people(愛國·愛民)’, which genuinely loves the nation and its citizens. Finally, we added ⑤ the spirit of ‘horizontal communication(水平疏通)’, which unites people through dialogue and persuasion. This is because a leader is not someone who acts alone but someone who works with members to achieve the organization's mission with one heart and one mind. We anticipate that Admiral Yi Sun-sin will be reborn as the ‘leader Yi Sun-sin’ who continues to attract attention both in the present and the future through ‘the New Five Great Spirits of Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin’.
