Objectives : In this study, I analyzed the medical text Supplementation for Wangbing’s Annotation and Revision of the Suwen written by Yu Hui (柳僖), a representative confucian scholar of late Joseon, to study its characteristics and meaning in medical history.
Methods : The Mastery of All Knowledge (文通, Muntong) is a private collectanea written by Yu Hui in which the Supplementation for Wangbing’s Annotation and Revision of the Suwen is included. In this study, the aforementioned text was the main subject of analysis while another medical text within the Mastery of All Knowledge, the Category of Medicine (醫藥類), was used as secondary material.
Results : Yu Hui applied the bibliographical methodology, which had become popular since Qing China, to his Huangdineijing research. He included his own clinical experience in his annotations along with commentary on the medicinal situation of Joseon. His most frequented description was on analysis of the Five Circuits and Six Qi.
Conclusions : The Supplementation for Wangbing’s Annotation and Revision of the Suwen written by Yu Hui suggests that bibliographical methodology was applied in medical text research in Joseon, as was in China and Japan. Such findings could act as key evidence in rectifying previous misunderstandings in Korean medical history and Huangdineijing research in Korea that Korean medicine underwent a decline in late Joseon.
