해방기 소설작법론 연구 - 정비석의 『소설작법』과 이무영의 『소설작법』을 중심으로

국문 초록

1949년에 보름 간격으로 출판된 정비석의 『소설작법』과 이무영의 『소설작법』을 대상으로 해방기 소설작법론에 대해 연구했다. 비슷한 시기에 발표되었지만, 이들 소설작법론이 지향하는 바는 서로 달랐다. 1949년에 출판된 정비석의 『소설작법』은 당시 이념적 대립으로부터 어느 정도 자유로웠다. 하지만 이러한 이념적 자유로움은 한국전쟁 중에 재출판된 『소설작법』(1953)에서는 더 이상 찾아볼 수 없었다. 좌익 계열 작가들의 이름은 삭제되었으며 그들이 쓴 작품 예문은 우익 계열 작가들의 작품으로 교체되었다. 하지만 정비석 『소설작법』의 진정한 이데올로기는 좌우 이념의 대립이 아니라 소비자본주의 시스템의 내재화에 있었다. 시장에서 매매되는 상품으로서의 소설에 대한 정비석의 인식은 작가주의에 기초한 예술적 측면보다는 독자의 취향에 따라 소비되는 재화의 측면을 더욱 강조한 것이었다. 이무영의 『소설작법』은 서울대학교에서 강의한 내용을 바탕으로 체계화된 것이었다. 소설쓰기라는 창작의 영역을 학문의 영역으로 편입시킨 것이다. 따라서 이무영의 『소설작법』은 기존의 미(美) 혹은 정(情)의 측면에서 논의되었던 소설을 진리, 과학의 차원으로 재배치하는 결과를 낳았다. 또한 이무영의 『소설작법』은 당시 조국에 대한 사명감으로 학업에 힘썼던 대학생을 대상으로 한다는 점에서 엘리트주의를 표방했다고 할 수 있다. 이러한 아카데미즘과 엘리트주의에 의해 이무영의 『소설작법』은 소설에서 재미와 흥미보다는 진리와 과학을 강조하게 되었다. 정비석의 『소설작법』과 이무영의 『소설작법』은 상품으로서의 소설쓰기, 아카데미즘의 관점에서 소설쓰기 등과 같은 개념을 정립함으로써 한국 현대문학의 기틀을 마련했다. 그러므로 본 연구는 한국 현대문학의 한 기원을 밝혔다는 의의를 가진다.

영문 초록

This study examines the theory of novel writing during the Liberation Period by focusing on Jeong Bi-seok's How to Write Novels and Lee Mu-young's How to Write Novels published in 1949. Although published simultaneously, these theories of novel had different aims. Jeong Bi-seok's How to Write Novels published in 1949, was free from ideological conflicts. However, the How to Write Novels published in 1953 did not have this ideological freedom. The names of left-wing writers were deleted, and examples of their works were replaced with those of right-wing writers. However, the true ideology of Jeong Bi-seok's How to Write Novels was not the conflict between left and right ideologies but the internalization of the consumer capitalist system. He perceived novels as commodities traded in the market. This emphasized the aspect of goods consumed according to reader’s tastes rather than the artistic aspect based on authorship in novels. Lee Mu-young's How to Write Novels was based on lectures delivered at Seoul National University. This transformed the creative field of novel writing into an academic field. Existing novels were discussed in terms of beauty or emotion. Lee Mu-young's How to Write Novels rearranged this into the dimensions of truth and science.: In addition, it targeted college students who were working diligently on their studies with a sense of mission for their country at the time. In this respect, Lee Mu-young's How to Write Novels expressed elitism and academism owing to which it emphasized truth and science rather than fun and interest in novels. Jeong Bi-seok's How to Write Novels and Lee Mu-yeong's How to Write Novels established concepts such as novel writing as a product and from the perspective of academism. Through this process, they laid the foundation for modern Korean literature. This study reveals one of the origins of contemporary Korean literature.
