언론보도를 통한 온라인 사적제재의 탐색적 연구

국문 초록

이 연구는 언론보도를 통하여 최근 사회적 논란이 되고 있는 온라인 사적제재에 대한 실태를 탐색으로 분석하고자 하였다. 2020년 1월부터 2025년 2월까지 온라인 사적제재에 관한 기사를 검색한 결과 총 215건이 추출되었으며, 연관어 분석을 통해 온라인 사적제재의 연도별 주요 이슈와 문제 양상을 분석하였 다. 분석 결과 디지털교도소, 배드파더스, 유튜버들의 무분별한 신상공개 논란, 정의 구현을 명분으로 사적 이익을 챙기는 사이트 운영자 등 온라인 사적제재의 문제 양상으로 비추어지는 다양한 언론 기사가 검색되었다. 연도별 기사를 바탕으로 온라인 사적제재에 대한 함의를 도출하면, 먼저 온라인 사적제재는 이제 개인 채널을 운영하는 운영자들의 사적 이익을 확보하기 위한 수단으로 여겨지고 있다는 점, 둘째, 정의구현과 인권침해의 충돌이 발생하고 있다는 점, 셋째, 콘텐츠 산업과 사적제재의 결합이 사적제재의 상업화 징후로 나타나고 있다는 점, 넷째, 온라인 사적제재는 공권력에 대한 불신의 결과로 나타나고 있다는 점, 다섯째, 범죄사건 피해자의 2차 피해 및 무고한 일반인이 양산되고 있다는 점 등으로 정리할 수 있다. 마지막으로 이러한 분석결과를 종합하여 온라인 사적제재에 대한 개인적·사회적·국가적 차원의 시사점을 제시하였다.

영문 초록

This study examines the phenomenon of online vigilantism by analyzing media reports. Using keyword association analysis, 215 news articles published between January 2020 and February 2025 were reviewed to identify key issues and patterns related to online private sanctions. The findings reveal that online vigilantism has evolved beyond spontaneous public reactions and is now deeply intertwined with digital media dynamics. Cases such as Digital Prison, Bad Fathers, and the indiscriminate exposure of personal information by YouTubers illustrate how online vigilantism has become both a tool for moral judgment and a means of generating personal profit. The study highlights several critical concerns. Online private sanctions have increasingly become commercialized, with content creators using controversial cases to attract attention and financial gain. The conflict between seeking justice and protecting human rights has intensified, raising ethical and legal dilemmas. The integration of online vigilantism into the content industry suggests that punitive exposure is no longer just an act of moral enforcement but a market-driven strategy. Furthermore, the widespread practice of digital punishment reflects public frustration with the legal system and distrust in state authority. At the same time, the rise of secondary victimization and the wrongful targeting of innocent individuals underscores the dangers of unchecked digital retribution. By examining these trends, this study underscores the need for a balanced approach that considers the ethical, legal, and social implications of online vigilantism. Addressing this issue requires efforts at multiple levels, including reinforcing trust in the judicial system, regulating digital platforms, and fostering media literacy to promote responsible information consumption.
