국문 초록

The history of Chosun University, the first people-founded higher education institute in Korea, symbolizes that the Korean democracy can be traced back to the nationalist movement originating mainly from the resistance efforts to the Empire of Japan in the early 20th century. This paper discusses the implication of Chosun University's history that Korean democracy corresponds to the national identity of the country. The second chapter explains that the foundation of Chosun University by the people, including the grass-roots of the time, means the completion of the failed attempt the independence activists during the Japanese colonial era. The third introduces the process the former president Park Cheolwoong of Chosun University tried to privatize the school and the 1·8 strife the students with some professors resisted Park's abusing power. Lastly, this article concludes that the historical events of the university bridge the nationalism and the democracy pursued by Koreans through the 20th and 21st centuries. In short, the foundation, development, and current situation of Chosun University says the characteristics of the Korean political change.
