국문 초록

이 글은 공군 정훈조직의 발족과 인적구성, 6·25전쟁 기간의 활동과 특징, 국방부 정훈국과의 지향 차이 등을 공군 발행 잡지를 중심으로 연구한 것이다. 6·25전쟁기 공군 정훈감실서 복무한 장교들은 1·4후퇴를 앞둔 1950년 말 공군에 입대한 엘리트 지식인이었다. 일제강점기 제국대학 출신으로 대학에서 학생을 가르치다 입대한 정훈감실 장교들의 배경, 공군 장병의 높은 교육 수준, 교양교육을 통해 올바른 관점을 갖게 하려는 美 공군의 장교 양성 교육 방향 등은 공군의 정훈 정책 방향을 ‘교양 있는 군인 양성’에 두게 했다. 공군 잡지 『코메트』는 교양주의적 정훈 기획의 핵심 산물이었다. 공군 정훈감실은 피난 문인들로 구성된 공군종군작가단(창공구락부)과 주한 美 공보원의 도움을 받아 『코메트』를 제작했다. 이를 통해 공군 장병에게 반공 자유 진영의 일원이라는 정체성을 안내하고, 항공을 소재로 한 문학 읽기와 독자 참여라는 공동체험을 통해 공군 장병 공동체 구성을 시도했다.

영문 초록

This article explores the formation, composition, and goals of the Public Affairs Office (PAO) in the Republic of Korea Air Force in the Korean War. It argues that while the PAOs of the Army and Ministry of National Defense were focused on anti-communism education, the Air Force PAO differed in its approach largely due to the recruitment of displaced intellectuals into its officer ranks. These new officers, influenced by the concept of culturalism (敎養主義) in early 20th century Japan and the focus on liberal arts education in the United States Air Force, aimed to bond and motivate Air Force officers through the promotion of aviation and general education in the arts and humanities. The PAO-produced magazine, Comet, was the key product of putting liberal arts-oriented PAOs planning into action.
