외솔 최현배의 시조 인식과 옥중(獄中) 시조의 의미

국문 초록

본고에서는 외솔 최현배(崔鉉培, 1894~1970)의 시조 체험과 향유 방식을 재구성하고, 옥중 시조의 특징과 의미를 살펴보았다. 특히 외솔이 창작한 옥중 시조는 감옥살이의 원형적인 삶을 묘사하는 것에 그치지 않는다는 점이 중요하다. 외솔은 함흥형무소를 마주할 때부터 해방을 맞이할 때까지 약 2년 10개월의 주요 체험을 옥중 시조로 구조화했다. 이 과정에서 외솔은 감옥살이를 자신이 살아야 하는 생에 대한 자각과 나라 사랑의 의지를 되새기는 전환점으로 삼는 데까지 나아가는 모습을 보여주었다. 본고에서는 이러한 점에 주목하면서 논의했다. 이 작품에 대해서는 세 가지 부분으로 나누어 논의를 진행했다. 첫 번째는, 1차 자료에 대한 검토이다. 선행 연구에서는 이 작품의 구성을 8제 36수로 여겨왔다. 그러나 본고에서 1차 자료를 확인한 결과 9제 36수로 수정이 필요하다는 가능성을 제시했다. 두 번째는, 창작 배경에 대한 것이다. 외솔은 이 시조를 심사를 달래기 위해 읊은 후에 일회성으로 향유하지 않고, 노랫말을 기록으로 남김으로써 이를 보존하려는 모습도 보여주었다. 세 번째는, 이 시조의 주요 구성과 특징이다. 외솔은 감옥살이의 힘듦과 죽음에 대한 두려움을 담아내기도 했지만, 나라 사랑을 위해 반드시 살아야 하며 구체적으로 무엇을 할 것인지에 대해 자각하는 면모를 보여주었다.

영문 초록

This paper reconstructed Oesol’s experience and way of enjoying Sijo, and examined the characteristics and meaning of Sijo in prison. Oesol did not only describe the archetypal life of prison life in this Sijo. He structured his significant experiences for 2 years and 10 months from when he encountered Hamheung Prison until liberation into Sijo. Oesol showed how he transformed his prison life into points where he realized the life he had to live and reflected his will to love his country. This work was discussed in three parts. The first part is a review of primary sources. Previous studies have considered the composition of this work to be 8 subjects and 36 verses. However, after checking the primary sources, it was discussed that this work needs to be revised into 9 subjects and 36 verses. The second part is the background of its creation. Oesol did not enjoy this Sijo once, but tried to preserve it by leaving the lyrics as a record. The third part is the composition and characteristics. Oesol expressed the hardships of prison life and the fear of death in this Sijo. In particular, he showed an awareness that he must live for the love of his country and what he would do.
