Purpose - This study investigates the impact of trade costs on logistics performance across G20 countries, aiming to clarify whether reducing trade-related frictions leads to measurable improvements in national logistics capabilities. Design/Methodology/Approach - Using a panel dataset comprising 19 G20 member countries from 2010 to 2020, this study conducts empirical analyses based on a two-way fixed effects model. The dependent variable is the Logistics Performance Index (LPI), while the core explanatory variable is the Trade Cost Index (TCI). The model also controls for GDP per capita (log-transformed) and the ICT development index. Additional robustness checks include lagged variables and subgroup analyses by economic development level. Findings - The results show that trade costs do not exert a statistically significant influence on logistics performance across the full sample. In contrast, ICT development has a positive and significant effect, particularly in emerging economies. GDP per capita is also positively associated with logistics performance in the emerging group, while no significant effects are found in advanced economies. Research Implications - This study reveals that improving logistics performance depends less on reducing overall trade costs and more on enhancing digital infrastructure and economic capacity, especially in developing countries. The findings suggest that policymakers should prioritize digital logistics strategies over traditional cost-reduction approaches. This research contributes to the logistics and trade literature by integrating trade cost indicators with digital and economic development variables within a panel data framework.
