국문 초록

수묵 만화와 수묵화는 표현 방식에서 본질적으로 밀접한 관계를 맺고 있다. 수묵화는 붓의 필치와 먹의 농담으로 표현되며, 여백(餘白)의 미와 힘 있는 필치를 중시하는 동양전통회화 양식이다. 수묵 기법을 차용한 만화 작품들은 이와 같은 미적 감흥과 미의식을 내포하고 있다. 또한, 동양회화를 감상하거나 제작하는 데 있어 미적 기준으로 매우 중요한 원칙은 ‘기운생동(氣韻生動)’이다. '기운(氣韻)'이란 가시적이고 표면적인 에너지를 나타내는 회화 형식일 뿐만 아니라, 작가의 내면세계와 그려진 대상과의 고도의 정신적 교감이 이루어짐으로 생성된 조형방식이다. 동양 미학의 영향을 받은 현대 만화가들 가운데, 마츠모토 타이요의 <죽도 사무라이>는 기운생동의 미를 가장 잘 구현한 작품이라 할 수 있다. 기운생동의 개념은 '필묵'과 '여백‘'과 같은 핵심적인 동양회화의 조형원리로써 나타나게 되는데, 이는 '음양의 조화' 혹은 '불변과 가변'의 대립적인 개념으로서의 기와 운을 해석하게 됨으로써 표출된다. 이러한 동양회화의 핵심적인 조형으로서의 기운생동은 수묵 만화에서도 동일하게 중요한 역할을 하며, 형식과 내용의 중추 개념이 되었다. <죽도 사무라이>에서 기운을 표현하는 방법은 ‘골법용필(骨法用筆)’과 ‘먹분오색(墨分五色)’의 필묵법, 그리고 구도와 필묵의 허실(虛實)이 어우러지는 여백법을 통해 구현된다. 마츠모토 타이요 수묵 스타일의 만화 작품을 관찰·분석함으로써 동양미학의 전통적 가치관이 현대적으로 적용될 가능성이 있음을 발견하였고, 즉 동양정신에 따른 수묵기법이 붓과 먹의 쓰임에 따라 다양성을 나타내어 만화에 더 많은 가능성을 부여하였다.

영문 초록

Ink Wash Manga maintains a fundamental connection with traditional East Asian ink painting in terms of expressive techniques, particularly through the use of brush strokes, ink gradation, and the aesthetics of empty space. Traditional ink painting emphasizes dynamic brushwork and spatial harmony, rooted in the core aesthetic principle of Chi-Yun-Sheng-Tung, which signifies the expression of inner vitality and spirit resonance in visual form. Among contemporary manga artists influenced by East Asian aesthetics, Taiyo Matsumoto’s Takemitsu Zamurai best exemplifies this principle. The work employs classical techniques such as structured brushwork, the five gradations of ink, and the compositional balance between void and fullness—effectively visualizing Chi-Yun through dynamic linework and tonal depth. This study analyzes how Matsumoto adapts traditional ink-painting methods within the manga form, revealing how the philosophical and aesthetic values of East Asian art can be reinterpreted in contemporary visual narratives. It demonstrates that Ink Wash Manga not only inherits the visual grammar of traditional painting but also expands its expressive possibilities through the medium of sequential art.
