국문 초록

(Purpose) This study investigates the Sanshinje (Mountain Spirit Rite) of Namwol-ri, Wadong, as a site of ritual memory and local continuity, focusing on its adaptive transmission in the face of ecological change and the COVID-19 disruption. (Design/methodology/approach) Based on 2025 oral history and ethnographic research, the study draws from interviews with community elders, observation of ritual elements, and analysis of spatial and symbolic transitions. (Findings) The study reveals that the Sanshinje of Namwol-ri demonstrates resilience through adaptive practices. Despite the physical loss of the sacred oak and interruptions caused by COVID-19, the rite has been reconfigured around a memorial stone, sustaining its role as a communal act of remembrance and moral expression. The rite's persistence affirms the significance of ritual as a dynamic system embedded in local ethical consciousness and intergenerational continuity. (Research implications or Originality) The study redefines Sanshinje as a lived, ethical tradition rooted in vernacular belief, offering insight into the sustainability of folk rituals amid social transformation. This study suggested the possibility of interdisciplinary expansion of folk beliefs research by analyzing the structure and symbols of Sanshinje in connection with the concepts of symbolic anthropology, ritual theory, and memory research. The ethical practice, sharing of emotions, and the social distribution structure of rituals performed by community members provide deep insight into today's discussion of community recovery.
