(Purpose) This study aims to examine the lives of young people from multicultural backgrounds who have been excluded from policies and outside of academic interest. In particular, it aims to analyze the determinants of young people from multicultural backgrounds going to college by paying attention to education in the inequality of multiple gaps such as education, employment, housing, and family formation facing young people from multicultural backgrounds. In addition, through the analysis results, policy implications for improving the college entrance rate of young people from multicultural backgrounds are presented.
(Design/methodology/approach) In this study, data from the 10th year (2020 survey) of the multicultural youth panel were used for analysis. First, we also tried to understand the demographic and sociological characteristics of youth and families from multicultural backgrounds. Next, the inference statistics analysis analyzed the factors affecting the college entrance of youth from multicultural backgrounds through binomial logistic regression analysis.
(Findings) As a result of the analysis, it was found that 717 (65.7%) of young people from multicultural backgrounds went to college and 374 (34.3%) of non-entrance. It was found that the gender of young people from multicultural backgrounds (OR=1.509, ρ<.01), residential area (OR=1.419, ρ<.05), and negative educational background (OR=.661, ρ<.01) had a significant effect on the college entrance of young people from multicultural backgrounds. It was found that the difference in the size of the region where young people from multicultural backgrounds reside, the number of household members, the income of household members, and the simulated educational background did not significantly affect the college entrance of young people from multicultural backgrounds.
(Research implications or Originality) In order to improve the college entrance rate of young people from multicultural backgrounds, it is first necessary to strengthen career support programs that help young men from multicultural backgrounds go to college. Next, it is necessary to provide more information to young people from multicultural backgrounds living in the non-metropolitan area and help them make career decisions. Finally, it is necessary to expand opportunities for parental education programs to provide information on college entrance as well as to help them respond to their children's social and psychological difficulties.
