Objective: The purpose of this study is to present the effects of forward/backward walking exercise on the Craniovertebral Angle and muscle activity of the Sternocleidomastoid, Upper Trapezius and Erector Spinae in individuals with forward head posture.
Method: 20 subjects were randomly selected and assigned to the experimental group(backward) and the control group(forward). The subjects performed forward/backward walking exercises with Pilates breathing for 30 minutes twice a week for 4 weeks. The Craniovertebral Angle and muscle activity of the Sternocleidomastoid, Upper Trapezius and Erector Spinae were measured before the experiment and after the experiment for 4 weeks.
Results: The Craniovertebral Angle of the experimental group increased by 5.2°, while the control group increased by an average of 2.4°. The muscle activity of the experimental group increased from 2.2 to 4 in the Sternocleidomastoid, from 5.8 to 7 in the Upper Trapezius, and from 5.2 to 6.8 in the Erector Spinae on average. The muscle activity of the control group increased from 2.4 to 3.2 in the Sternocleidomastoid, from 5.4 to 5.8 in the Upper Trapezius, and from 4.6 to 6.2 in the Erector Spinae on average.
Conclusion: Both groups showed differences in neck and body muscle activity and Craniovertebral Angle. The Craniovertebral Angle change was higher in the experimental group compared to the control group. Backward walking had a positive effect on the forward head posture.
