Against the backdrop of China’s urbanization and economic restructuring, the widening economic gap between urban and rural areas has put township youth under the pressure of identity dilemmas and alienation of intergenerational relationships. This paper takes the creation of the Chinese realist feature film Xiangyin as the object of study, focusing on the struggle of a township woman, Li Er, in her pursuit of self-worth and identity in the urban-rural gap. With dialect symbols, open-ended ending and documentary video style as the core of the narrative, the film integrates female perspective and realist aesthetics, explores the path of self-redemption of young people in the townships in the collision of traditional and modern values during the transformation of Chinese society, and reflects the profound impact of the imbalance between contemporary urban and rural development on the individual’s psychology, so as to break through the stereotypical male-dominated framework of the countryside narrative through the film and television art and to broaden the dimension of the creation of social issues through the awakening of women’s subjectivity. The film breaks through the stereotypical male-dominated framework of rural narratives through film and television art, broadens the creative dimension of social issues through the awakening of female subjectivity, provides an innovative narrative model for the expression of “local knowledge” in the context of globalization, and stimulates the public’s deeper reflection on the integration of urban and rural cultures and the identity of women.
