국문 초록
The purpose of this article is to describe the status change of Mandarin, one of the four official languages, in Singapore's Chinese communities and its implications from the perspective of sociolinguistics. The number of Mandarin speakers, which had been steadily increasing until the 2010 census, decreased significantly in the 2020 census, and it was surveyed that English speakers are replacing the position. Singapore defines English, Mandarin, Malay, and Tamil as official languages, but in reality, English has established a practical hierarchy of ligua franca. Even in the Chinese community, Mandarin is becoming increasingly marginalized as their function as identity markers has weakened. Mandarin is changing its status from a legal official language to a de facto heritage language. This change in Mandarin's status is not just a language conversion, but is deeply linked to the process of reconstructing identity. In addition, Singapore has been classified as the only country that belongs to an outer circle in both English and Chinese languages, but the recent change in status makes this classification questionable. The change in Mandarin's status in Singapore shows how language attitudes relate to language policy and identity issues. Singapore is an interesting example of how language hierarchiey is formed and transformed in a multilingual society, providing important implications for future language policy and directional setting of language education.
