국문 초록
This study explores how Croatia has constructed its contemporary cultural identity by navigating between Balkanism and Europeanism since the 1990s. Following its independence, Croatia sought to distance itself from the negative image of the Balkans and reorient toward a Central European identity through strategies of “de-Balkanization” and “Europeanization.” However, the findings show that this process was not simply about rejection. Balkanism, rather than being entirely excluded, has been selectively re-appropriated across cultural industries, tourism, popular culture, and politics to express national uniqueness. Drawing on Stuart Hall’s theory of cultural identity and Maria Todorova’s concept of Balkanism, the study argues that Croatian identity is fluid and continuously reconstructed. Croatia does not simply choose between Balkan and European identities, but strategically negotiates both. This multilayered approach moves beyond nationalist narratives, revealing how Balkan elements are now sometimes used as cultural assets. Although the study focuses primarily on elite discourse and lacks detailed analysis of public or generational perspectives, it contributes to understanding the dynamic, strategic nature of identity-making in post-socialist Europe. Croatia’s case illustrates how dual heritage can be leveraged to redefine national distinctiveness within a globalized context.
