국문 초록

이 연구는 연구자가 중국 다자녀 가정의 장녀로서 경험한 성장 과정을 성 역할 및 정체성 형성 과정에 초점을 맞추어 해석한 자문화기술지이다. 연구자는 중국 농촌 지역의 가부장적 가정 안에서 전형적 장녀의 역할을 성실히 수행해 왔지만, 동시에 도시(베이징) 및 타국(한국)으로의 이주를 통해 비전형적 장녀로서의 삶을 적극적으로 실천하고자 하였다. 이 과정에서 장녀라는 위치가 연구자의 핵심적인 정체성으로 체화되는 과정을 성 역할 이론과 연극 이론, 문화적응 이론을 빌려 설명하고자 한다. 이를 위해 연구자의 개인적 기억, 사진, 소셜미디어 게시물, 가족구성원과의 인터뷰를 수집 및 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 연구자의 삶은 환영받지 못한 전형적 장녀로서의 유년기, 가족 내 이방인으로서 ‘전면’과 ‘후면’에서의 역할 수행 사이의 모순을 느꼈던 청년기, 유학이라는 초국적 경험을 통해 비전형적 장녀로 다시 태어난 성인기로 정리될 수 있었다. 연구자의 삶을 ‘젠더 렌즈’를 통해 성찰적으로 분석하는 작업을 통해, 연구자 개인의 일대기가 개별적이고 특수한 경험이라기보다는 동아시아 가부장적 사회의 구조적인 차별과 불평등이 반영된 사회적 현상임을 알 수 있었다.

영문 초록

This autoethnographic study examines the researcher’s lived experiences as the eldest daughter in a Chinese multichild family, with a focus on the processes of gender role socialization and identity formation. Situated within the patriarchal framework of a rural Chinese family, the researcher initially conformed to the expectations of a typical eldest daughter while simultaneously striving to construct a non-traditional identity through migration to urban centers (Beijing) and abroad (South Korea). This study explores how the positionality of “eldest daughter” became internalized as a core identity, drawing on established theoretical frameworks for analysis. To achieve this, the researcher collected and analyzed data from personal memories, photographs, social media posts, and interviews with family members. The study employs gender role theory, dramaturgical theory, and acculturation theory as key analytical lenses. The findings delineate the researcher’s life into three distinct stages: (1) childhood, characterized by both compliance with and resistance to the role of a typical eldest daughter; (2) adolescence, marked by tensions in negotiating insider and outsider status within the family’s “front stage” and “back stage”; and (3) adulthood, shaped by transnational experiences that facilitated the reconstruction of a non-traditional eldest daughter identity. By examining the researcher’s personal trajectory through a gendered lens, this study underscores how individual biographies are shaped by broader structural forces. Rather than being an isolated or exceptional case, the researcher’s experiences reflect systemic patterns of gendered expectations and inequalities embedded within East Asian patriarchal societies.
