연구자의 위치성과 권력관계에 대한 논의: 비판적 질적연구 경험에 대한 성찰을 중심으로

국문 초록

본 글은 사회의 불평등과 관련된 현상을 다루는 비판적 질적연구에서 연구자의 위치성이 연구자연구참여자 권력관계와 어떠한 영향을 주고받는지 논의한다. 이를 위해 구체적인 사례로 나의 질적 연구 경험을 성찰한다. 나는 부모님이 대학을 나오지 않은 미국의 12학년 학생들의 소셜미디어를 통한 학습경험에 대해 박사학위 논문 연구를 수행했다. 이때의 기억자료와 연구자의 성찰일지, 면담자료, 연구참여자 및 연구참여 후보자와의 문자메시지를 사용하여 성찰적 주제분석을 실시했다. 성찰의 결과로 비판적 질적연구를 수행할 때 연구자가 자기반성을 통해 고려할 점에 대해 제시하였다. 첫째, 연구자는 자신의 맥락적이고 역동적인 위치성으로 인해 연구과정에서 취약함을 느낄 수 있다. 둘째, 연구자가 느끼는 취약함이라는 감정은 연구에 실재하는 권력관계를 흐리게 만들 위험이 있다. 연구자의 성찰은 자신의 감정을 고백함으로써 연구과정을 정당화하는 데 사용되는 것이 아니라 실재하는 권력관계를 직시하는 데 사용되어야 한다. 셋째, 연구자는 무비판적으로 결점 프레이밍을 사용함으로써 연구참여자를 더욱 주변화하는 결과를 낳을 수 있다. 비판적 질적연구를 수행하는 연구자는 연구참여자를 연구에 적극적으로 초대함으로써 대화적이고 상호적인 의미를 생성할 수 있어야 한다.

영문 초록

This paper discusses how researcher positionality interacts with power relations between researchers and participants in critical qualitative research that addresses societal inequalities. To explore this interaction, I reflected on my own qualitative research experience. I conducted doctoral research on the learning experiences of 12th-graders in the U.S. whose parents did not complete college, using social media as the platform for their learning. For the reflection, I drew on my memory data, reflexive journals, interview transcripts, and text messages exchanged with research participants and candidate participants, and conducted a reflexive thematic analysis. Through the reflection, I yielded several insights for researchers conducting critical qualitative research. First, researchers may feel vulnerable due to their contextual and dynamic positionality throughout the research process. Second, this sense of vulnerability may obscure the power dynamics at play in the study. Researcher reflexivity should not be used to justify the research process by confessing one’s emotions, but rather to confront and acknowledge the actual power relations at play. Third, uncritically adopting deficit framing in research may further marginalize participants. Researchers conducting critical qualitative studies should strive to generate dialogic and reciprocal meaning by actively involving participants in the research process.
