With the expansion of offshore wind farms driven by carbon neutrality goals and the development of renewable energy, conflicts with traditional maritime traffic routes are increasing. This highlights the importance of clearly identifying maritime traffic routes. However, current separation distances between ships and offshore wind farms are often based on qualitative assessments, emphasizing the need for quantitative, technical standards. This study analyzed maritime traffic density using AIS (Automatic Identification System) data collected across four seasons in the waters near Yeonggwang, Jeollanam-do, South Korea, to identify traffic intensity zones. Based on spatio-temporal density analysis, the widths of shipping routes were determined: 10 km for the top 10% density zone and 16 km for the top 20%. To define confidence intervals for traffic, levels of 67%, 75%, 90%, 95%, and 99% were tested. It was found that intervals beyond 95% exceeded the observed total traffic range and were therefore deemed inappropriate. International practices were also reviewed: the UK uses a 90% confidence level for estimating separation distances, PIANC applies similar methodologies, and the US uses a 95% level, but only in designated routes. Based on these findings, this study concludes that a 90% confidence interval is appropriate for calculating safety distances between ships and offshore wind farms to ensure maritime traffic safety in conventional traffic routes. It is expected that this study will contribute to establishing a more robust maritime traffic safety environment.
