알모도바르의 영화 <룸넥스트도어 The Room Next Door>를 통해 본 죽음의 사회적 드라마

국문 초록

본 연구는 영화 <룸넥스트도어>에서 마사의 죽음이 말기 암환자 개인의 선택을 넘어 주변 인물들과 사회에 갈등을 야기하는 하나의 사회적 사건으로 보고 빅터 터너(Victor Turner)가 분석한 사회적 드라마(social drama)의 개념을 통해 마사의 죽음이갖는 사회적 의미를 분석했다. 영화 속 죽음의 서사를 사회적 드라마로서 해석하고, 죽음을 둘러싼 공간적, 관계적 전이가 어떤 방식으로 표현되는지를 분석한다. 그리고이러한 사회적 드라마가 갖는 리미널리티의 속성이 감독이 재현하는 영화적 시공간감각을 통해 어떻게 표현되는지 살펴보았다. 알모도바르 감독은 미국 화가 에드워드호퍼(Edward Hopper)의 회화적 이미지를 활용하여 죽음을 둘러싼 시공간적 분위기와 인물의 감정 구조를 표현하고 있다고 보고, 사회적 드라마의 단계별 변화를 영화장면을 통해 어떻게 시각적으로 구현하고 있는지를 분석하였다. 죽음을 맞이하기 위해 마사가 임시로 빌린 공간은 일상과 분리된 전이적 장소로 기능하며, 알모도바르감독은 호퍼 회화의 고독하고 고립된 구도를 특유의 색채 감각으로 재해석함으로써마사의 감정 상태와 죽음 이후 형성되는 공동체의 변화를 상징적으로 보여준다. 영화는 낭만적 사랑이나 전통적 가족이라는 근대적 규범에서 벗어나, 새로운 관계와 비제도적 유대를 탐색함으로써 죽음이라는 전이 상태에서 발생하는 공동체적 가능성을 실험한다. 영화 <룸넥스트도어>는 현대 사회의 죽음이 보여주는 사회적 드라마로서 사회 질서의 해체와 전이를 통해 공동체로서 사회적 세계가 어떻게 재구성되는 지에 대한 함의를 제공함으로써 영화 사회학적으로 새로운 관점을 제시한다

영문 초록

This study analyzed the social meaning of Martha’s death in the movie Room Next Door by viewing it as a social event that causes conflicts with people around her and society beyond the personal choice of a terminally ill cancer patient, and analyzed the social meaning of Martha’s death through the concept of social drama analyzed by Victor Turner. It interpreted the narrative of death in the movie as a social drama and analyzed how the spatial and relational transitions surrounding death are expressed. It also examined how the characteristics of liminality in this social drama are expressed through the sense of cinematic space and time that the director reproduces. In addition, it analyzed how director Almodóvar visually reproduces the spatiotemporal atmosphere and emotional structure surrounding death by utilizing the pictorial images of American painter Edward Hopper in the movie. The space that Martha temporarily borrows to face death functions as a transitional place separated from everyday life, and director Almodóvar symbolically shows Martha’s emotional state and the changes in the community formed after death by reinterpreting the lonely and isolated composition of Hopper’s paintings with his unique sense of color. The film experiments with the communal possibilities that arise from the transitional state of death by exploring new familiality and non-institutional bonds, breaking away from modern norms such as romantic love and traditional family. The film Room Next Door presents a new perspective in the sociology of film by providing implications on how the social world is reconstructed as a community through the disintegration and transition of social order as a social drama that shows death in modern society.
