Strategies for Enhancing the International Competitiveness of Chinese Chamber Musicals：A Case Study of The Butterfly on the Bund

Amid the growing internationalization of China’s cultural industry, Chinese chamber musicals have emerged as a unique form of cultural export. This study examines The Butterfly on the Bund, the first Chinese chamber musical to achieve commercial residency overseas, as a representative case. Using Porter’s Diamond Model, the research evaluates its international competitiveness across six dimensions: factor conditions, demand conditions, related and supporting industries, firm strategy and structure, government, and opportunities. The findings reveal that the musical successfully integrates creativity-driven production and digital innovation, aligns with global audience preferences, establishes international partnerships, adopts a dual model of copyright export and co-production, and benefits from institutional support and digital communication trends. However, challenges remain, including limited professionalization in production teams, weak international marketing capacity, and cultural barriers that affect audience engagement. In response, the study proposes six strategic directions: enhancing innovation and technology, fostering collaborative value chains, responding to international market needs, strengthening global operations, increasing policy and funding support, and promoting culturally adaptive communication. These recommendations offer both theoretical insight and practical guidance for improving the global competitiveness of Chinese chamber musicals, contributing to the sustainable development of China’s cultural exports and the broader goal of high-quality cultural globalization.
