국문 초록
This paper investigates the evolving representations of China in Irish literature from the early 20th century to the present, focusing on how Chinese imagery is constructed and reinterpreted across different historical periods. The study identifies two key phases in the literary portrayal and discursive transformation of China. In the first half of the 20th century, Irish writers often depicted China as a symbol of “Oriental philosophy” and the “cultural Other”, serving either as a medium of critique against Western modernity or as an imagined utopian alternative. In contrast, the latter half of the century and contemporary works witness a re-coding of China’s image, reflecting more pluralistic cultural meanings and deeper engagements with questions of identity.
