This study investigates ellipsis in English concessive clauses from a corpus-based perspective. Using naturally occurring data from the Corpus of Contemporary American English, the study reveals that stripping is by far the most frequent ellipsis type in concessive environments, significantly outnumbering other constructions such as verb phrase ellipsis and gapping. The findings show that stripping aligns closely with the discourse demands of concession, offering syntactic flexibility and pragmatic adaptability across a range of contexts. A functional classification further demonstrates that stripping serves varied discourse roles, from restricting claims to signaling contrast or stance. These results support theoretical accounts linking ellipsis resolution to discourse coherence, and underscore the importance of corpus evidence in understanding how syntax interacts with discourse structure.
