국문 초록

본고에서는 17~18세기 과거 시행 과정에서 논란이 되었던 문제를 둘러싸고 벌어졌던 당파 간의 정치적 갈등과 대립 양상을 살펴보고, 합격자 선발 과정에서 문제가 되고 쟁점화되었던 주요 사안과 그 처결 과정을 검토하여 조선 후기 政爭의 일단면과 과거 시행과정에서 발생했던 科弊와의 관련성을 고찰하였다. 17~18세기에는 조정에서 권력을 쟁취하기 위한 당파 간의 政爭이 극심해졌는데 각 당파는 자신들의 세력을 확장하고 조정에서 수적인 우위를 점하기 위해 과거를 주요 수단으로 활용하였다. 각 당파는 이러한 목적을 달성하기 위해 조정에서 권력을 장악했을 때 여러 명목을 내세워 과거를 자주 시행하였다. 또 같은 당파에 속하는 인물을 선발하려는 과정에서 다양한 부정행위도 서슴지 않고 자행하였다. 숙종 대에는 합격자가 작성한 科文의 격식과 체제에 대한 논란이 급격하게 증가하게 되는데, 이는 겉으로 과거와 관련한 문제를 표방하고 있지만 실제로는 조정에서 정국의 주도권을 쥐고 권력을 쟁취하기 위한 각 당파의 정치적 의도가 존재했다. 이러한 상황은 숙종대를 지나 영조 대에서도 유사하게 나타났다. 과거 부정행위에 대한 사건에서 시작되었지만, 그에 대한 처결과정은 각 당파 간의 政爭으로 얼룩졌고, 결국 과거 문제를 빌미로 삼았지만 최종적인 목적은 반대 당파의 과거 합격자 수를 줄이고 자신들이 속한 당파가 조정의 주도권을 장악하는 데 있었다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the political conflicts and confrontations between political parties over issues that were controversial in the past implementation process of the late Joseon Dynasty, examines major issues that were problematic and controversial in the process of selecting successful candidates, and examines the relationship between the front page of the late Joseon Dynasty political dispute and the evils of the past system that occurred in the past implementation process. In the late Joseon Dynasty, political strife between factions to gain power in the court became severe, and each faction used the past as a major means to expand their power and gain a numerical advantage in the court. In order to achieve this goal, each partisan frequently implemented the past under various names when they took power in the court. In addition, various irregularities were carried out without hesitation in the process of selecting people belonging to the same party. Controversy over the formality and system of exam writing(科文) by successful candidates rapidly increased during Sukjong's reign, which apparently advocates issues related to the past, but in reality, each faction had a political intention to take the initiative in the government and win power in the court. This situation was similar in Yeongjo's reign after Sukjong's reign. Although it started with a case of past cheating, the process of dealing with it was marred by political strife between each faction, and eventually took the issue of the past as an excuse, the final purpose was to reduce the number of successful applicants from the opposing party and to take the initiative in the court.
