무한과 유한 사이에서 절망하는 인간을 향한 기독교 변증: 한병철의 『피로사회』와 파스칼의 『팡세』

국문 초록

현대 사회에서는 긍정 담론의 확산과 함께, 일부 학자들에 의해 긍정적 사고가 삶의 질을 향상시키는 핵심 요인으로 작용할 수 있다는 주장이 제기 되어 왔다. 그러나 일각에서는 이러한 긍정성의 강조가 현실을 간과하고 인 간의 유한성을 외면함으로써, 오히려 현실의 문제에 대한 적절한 대응을 저 해할 수 있다고 비판한다. 본 연구는 한병철의 『피로사회』와 파스칼의 『팡세』를 비교하여, 현대인 이 과도한 긍정성과 인간 실존의 유한성 사이에서 절망을 경험하는 구조를 분석한다. 한병철과 파스칼은 모두 인간이 무한한 가능성을 요구받는 현실 속에서 필연적으로 한계를 마주할 수밖에 없으며, 이러한 상황에서 멈추어 자신과 현실을 성찰해야 한다고 주장한다는 점에서 인간 실존에 대한 유사 한 이해를 공유한다. 그러나 절망을 극복하는 방식에 있어 두 사상가는 서로 다른 입장을 취 한다. 한병철은 보는 법의 교육을 통해 개인이 관조적이고 주체적인 삶을 형 성함으로써, 자기 착취적 구조로부터 해방될 수 있음을 모색한다. 반면, 파스 칼은 외부로부터 하나님의 개입을 통해서만 인간은 절망으로부터 해방될 수 있다고 주장한다. 이에 따라, 본 연구는 파스칼이 제시하는 해결책이 현대 사 회의 과잉된 긍정성 속에서 절망하는 인간을 향한 하나의 일관성 있고, 독특 한 기독교적 대안이 될 수 있음을 논증한다.

영문 초록

In contemporary society, with the expansion of the discourse on positivity, some scholars have argued that positive thinking can function as a key factor in enhancing quality of life. However, others criticize this emphasis on positivity, asserting that it overlooks reality and disregards human finitude, thereby hindering an adequate response to real-life challenges. This study compares Byung-Chul Han’s The Burnout Society and Pascal’s Pensées to analyze the structure through which modern individuals experience despair between the demand for positivity and the finitude of human existence. Both Han and Pascal share a similar understanding of human existence, arguing that individuals inevitably confront their limitations within a reality that demands infinite possibilities and that in such circumstances, they must pause to reflect upon themselves and their reality. However, their approaches to overcoming despair differ. Han explores the possibility of liberation from self-exploitative structreus through the education of “the pedagogy of seeing,” which enables individuals to cultivate a contemplative and autonomous life. In contrast, Pascal asserts that human beings are inherently in a state of despair and that they can only be liberated from it through divine intervention. Accordingly, this study demonstrates that Pascal’s proposed resolution serves as a consistent and distinctive Christian alternative for individuals struggling with despair in a society dominated by excessive positivity.
