Purpose - With the rapid development of the digital economy, the competitiveness of the modern service trade faces unprecedented challenges and opportunities. This paper systematically analyzes how the digital economy influences the competitiveness of the modern service trade, particularly how it drives global competitiveness by affecting the research environment and foreign direct investment inflows. Design/Methodology/Approach - This study uses panel data from the top 20 countries by global GDP from 2014 and 2023, constructing a fixed-effects model to assess the impact of digital economy development on modern service trade competitiveness. Empirical testing shows that the digital economy plays a key role in enhancing service trade competitiveness by improving the research environment and attracting foreign direct investment. Robustness tests with multidimensional variables ensure the reliability of the results. Findings - The study finds that the rapid development of the digital economy has significantly boosted the international competitiveness of the modern service trade through two main channels: improving the research environment and increasing foreign direct investment inflows. Moreover, the impact is stronger in developing countries than in those developed, indicating differentiated effects across countries at different stages of development. Research Implications - This paper constructs a dynamic model at the national level to explore the relationship between digital economy development and modern service trade competitiveness. The findings provide theoretical and practical insights for policymakers promoting the internationalization of the service trade and enhancing global competitiveness.
