Assessing the Link Between Logistics Performance and Ecological Footprint: Evidence from Sub-Saharan Africa

Purpose - This study investigates the relationship between logistics performance and ecological footprint to assess environmental sustainability across 33 Sub-Saharan African countries. Given the essential role of robust logistics systems in supporting trade competitiveness and economic growth, examining the environmental repercussions is critical to developing balanced policy interventions. Design/Methodology/Approach - Using a balanced panel dataset from 2007 to 2018, this study employs the two-step System Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) estimator. By controlling for country-specific effects and addressing potential endogeneity, this method offers more precise parameter estimates regarding how logistics performance impacts environmental outcomes in the region. Findings - The results indicate that overall logistics performance, along with three key sub-indicators, efficiency in arranging competitively priced shipments, the quality of transport and trade-related infrastructure, and the effectiveness of customs clearance, drives an upsurge in the ecological footprint. Furthermore, the study reveals the detrimental influence of per capita GDP on environmental quality, indicating that unrestrained economic growth can intensify ecological deterioration. Research Implications - Based on these findings, policymakers in Sub-Saharan Africa are encouraged to develop environmentally sustainable logistics infrastructure, incorporating energy-efficient technologies, promoting investment in renewables, and implementing stringent regulations to mitigate the adverse environmental consequences of logistics activities. Such forward-looking measures are pivotal to harmonizing economic advancement with ecological preservation, thereby ensuring long-term resilience and sustainable prosperity in the region.
