국문 초록
Purpose - This study seeks to quantify carbon tax reductions and assess the expected economic benefits by examining the burden of indirect emissions associated with power plants, which are the primary focus of the European Union (EU) carbon border adjustment tax. This research also aims to evaluate their impact on trade, thereby contributing to the mitigation of indirect carbon dioxide emissions in the power generation sector.
Design/Methodology/Approach - To achieve this objective, this study analyzes indirect emissions generated during the electricity production process of thermal power plants under the EU carbon border adjustment system set to be implemented from 2026. Tariffs and carbon reduction measures relevant to the trade sector are applied by scenario, and the total indirect emissions and calculated amounts before and after introducing reduction devices are analyzed to examine the trade benefits due to carbon reduction.
Findings - The step-by-step reduction effects and trade benefits owing to the introduction of capture devices reveal that carbon costs can be reduced by up to 90%, which directly leads to companies’ export competitiveness.
Research Implications - This study has high academic and practical value because it shows the potential of producing results applicable to the field by presenting actual data when trade and engineering are studied in an interdisciplinary manner. This study provides valuable insights into the intersection of environmental policy, energy production, and international trade, offering both theoretical and practical implications for policymakers, power generation industries, and trade bodies.
