The Invention of Hugo Cabret does not confine itself solely to text or illustration; instead, its narrative unfolds through an intricate interplay between the two. Moreover, the book transcends the conventional framework of printed literature, crossing into the realm of cinema and expanding the “reading experience” into new dimensions. In addition to its deep engagement with film, the novel also explores themes of technology through motifs such as clocks, trains, and automatons. Rather than settling into the dichotomy of machine versus human, the story persistently navigates the boundaries between the two, capturing a nuanced sense of reality and thereby enriching its meaning. This act of crossing boundaries, in essence, represents the core of creativity. While remaining within established frameworks offers comfort, venturing beyond familiar borders in search of reality is a challenging yet inherently creative endeavor. By refusing to be confined by traditional distinctions—between text and image, book and film, machine and human—The Invention of Hugo Cabret makes a significant creative leap, expanding the realm of possibility. While tracing this creative trajectory through textual analysis is itself an engaging pursuit, experiencing the book’s creativity firsthand with students in a classroom setting holds even greater pedagogical significance. This highlights the need for further research into instructional models that incorporate such innovative classroom experiences.
