국문 초록
This study aimed to develop nail designs inspired by the Petroglyphs of Daegok-ri, exploring ways to modernize traditional cultural elements. To achieve this, a literature review was conducted to assess the cultural significance of the Daegok-ri petroglyphs and the theoretical foundations of nail design. A total of 312 petroglyph patterns were analyzed to identify key design elements. The development process followed five stages: planning, initiation, decision-making, implementation, and evaluation. The final designs were refined through expert consultations and completed using Photoshop and NailPOP, showcasing the potential applications of traditional patterns in nail art. This study confirmed that the Petroglyphs of Daegok-ri,, first discovered and surveyed in 1971, were designated a National Treasure in 1995 and selected as a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage listing in 2023. Created during the late Neolithic period, these petroglyphs are the oldest known rock carvings in the Republic of Korea and among the earliest whale-hunting relics worldwide. They hold significant academic and artistic value, representing the distinctive maritime fishing culture of the North Pacific Ocean. Nail Design is a form of artistic expression that beautifies the small surfaces of fingernails and toenails, creatively integrating various design elements such as shape, color, texture, and patterns. However, previous studies have largely examined petroglyphs and nail design separately, with little research exploring the direct application of petroglyph motifs to nail art. This study filled that gap by analyzing petroglyph patterns, identifying key design elements, and developing nail art designs inspired by these motifs. The findings emphasize the potential for reinterpreting traditional patterns in a modern context and applying them to nail art, suggesting that this approach can help preserve and promote traditional culture in contemporary society.
